Davenport Negro women Lucille Hart aged 23 and Haddie White aged 38 were arrested after a cutting incident in which one woman swung a meat cleaver. Both required medical attention.
Sioux City Donald Sutton admitted stealing cash and pled guilty to looting a home. Detective Chief Tom Farley noted the motive as stealing cash to beat the law. Sutton received a five year sentence at Fort Madison penitentiary.
Creston police recovered a majority of stolen items from a juvenile gang after a two week crime wave. Several boys admitted thefts and officers reported items including a $100 camera and a pistol were among those recovered.
Cedar Falls taxi driver Olsson Jr. 22 pleaded not guilty before District Judge George W. Wood to a rape charge filed by a 19 year old Iowa State Teachers College co ed. Bond set at 5000 pounds. he could not meet the bail.
Fire destroyed five structures in Guernsey including a restaurant theater telephone office and a dance hall plus an empty building. A switchboard operator spotted the blaze. Damage was set at about $30,000 with origin undetermined.
West Burlington school board rejects all ten bids for a new school building as too high. The project will await PWA input before further action is taken, with the structure intended to replace the present school and jointly financed by the PWA.
J H Peet superintendent of Cedar Falls schools outlined qualities of a desirable teacher for employing officials. He praised a teacher with a good attitude, collegiality, model character for pupils, and active college and community involvement.
Three Newton residents and two Metz natives were injured when Roy A Bradt of Maytag Co. and Hugh Moffitt of Metz collided head on. Moffitt, accompanied by his daughter, faced Bradt who was passing a stalled car. Edward and Mrs. Lamb of Newton were with the Bradt party.
Hill McConaughy haberdasher announces a new specialty shop for men's apparel in Washington. Located in the Jeffrey building near the square toward the courthouse, the founder brings years of local experience with Carter, Widmer, and J. C. Penney. The store will offer custom tailored suits, coats, sport and dress wear, plus hats neckwear and accessories.

Sheriff Lealand Fry of Benton County Iowa died from a bullet wound after an escaped prisoner Leah Crowe fired at him during a resistance attempt in Garrison Iowa. Crowe then shot at a crowd and killed himself as deputies closed in, ending a manhunt that began October 22.
Hyde Park reports Roosevelt’s national address signaling effort to extend the new deal past 1940. Leaders from coast to coast study his broadcast urging experienced liberal candidates to back the administration and ensure continuity of liberal governance.
Rolla Hyde 48, farmer from three miles southwest of Wayland, suffered a left arm injury when a dog in the back seat of a car stepped on a shotgun, causing discharge. He was flown to Henry County Hospital Mount Pleasant for an amputation at the shoulder. condition reported serious. Hyde previously broke both wrists in July from a hay wagon fall.
Washington Y M C A drive reports pledges totaling 4009.50 with a goal of 5150 for next year. Campaign continues with 30 fundraisers and 300 prospects to be seen by 30 canvassers starting next week. If additional money comes in, Y work can expand beyond current limits. Today's pledge breakdown lists 1258, 944, 763.50, 756, and 288 from rural donors.
An estimated 900000 Iowa adults expected to vote in the third post New Deal general election since 1932. The race centers on Gillette Dickinson Kraschel and Wilson in senatorial and gubernatorial contests with clashes over the New Deal and farm policy.

Mrs. Mary Ann Stumpf 99 a native of Alsace France died at 10 45 PM at her daughter's home a mile north of Brighton after a week of illness. Funeral services set for 9 30 AM Monday at St Joseph Church East Pleasant Plain with burial in Elm Grove. She leaves two daughters Mrs. Bleess and Mrs Florence Solbach, one son Louis, seven grandchildren.
St Pauls Evangelical and Reformed congregation hosts a regional rally Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev C A Fisher of Wheatland will speak and John E Hughes will sing. About seventy five men from southeastern town churches are expected. luncheon will follow.
