Charles W. Gill said two men pickpocketed him of 283 dollars near the Iowa State Bank and Trust Co. Police recovered Paul Woodward from Cedar Rapids after a beating in an alley. He claimed three men from a local tavern had robbed him of 26 dollars.
The November term of federal district court ended with a no bill in the case of Harold Hanson of Iowa City. Hanson faced a charge tied to a letter containing 109 dollars sent to him as an Iowa University student.
Thomas F aged 76 had a birthday Monday while his twin grandsons Tommy and Jerry Stonebarger celebrated their second birthday on the same day. The twins are sons of Mr and Mrs W H Stonebarger.
George Clayton, 40, a WPA employee on a street repair project in Burlington, was severely burned when a kettle of boiling tar spilled onto him after his foot slipped. Witnesses say the accident turned the kettle onto him and hospital attendants report his condition as critical with possible eye loss.
About 500 delegates at the annual Iowa Christian Youth conference in Oskaloosa discussed their views on what is wrong with the world. Parents were on trial as youths voiced dreams of homes where every member can have fun and freely discuss any subject with understanding from elders.
Mrs Jeff Heely wife of an unemployed WPA worker gave birth to twins in a tent near Bettendorf. Heely planned a hospital birth but the twins arrived early. The babies were later brought to a hospital and reported in good condition.
Nellie Davis of Crawfordaville reported to Iowa City police that a violin valued at 500 dollars had been taken from her car. The instrument, made in 1780, was in a black leather case with a Drake University pennant. Police broadcast the theft and description over the radio to Iowa and adjoining states.
H. J. Rees aged 65, father of Mrs. W. J. Shannon, died at the Luth eran hospital in Des Moines after ten days with influenza and a recent heart ailment. Survived by wife and six children including Martha of Madrid and Marian of Boone. William Shannon left for Des Moines as funeral plans center on a Madrid Christian church service anticipated Sunday.
Bethel residents report two fires on Wednesday evening. An upstairs storage room in the Ben Fitzgerald home burned unknowingly from an undetermined origin. Later, the Charles Kolosick farm barn burned down, destroying the barn three heifer calves and contents, with about 1500 dollars in insured losses.
Nellie Manners, veteran Crawfordsville correspondent for over thirty years, died suddenly at about 6 30 am after a heart attack. Born January 4 1880 in Crawfordsville she lived there all her life and served as a teacher, clerk and assistant postmaster. She leaves two sisters and a brother. funeral Saturday at United Presbyterian Church with L A Jones Funeral Home handling plans.
A barn erupted in flames attracting immediate neighbor aid. Residents from Washington, Haskins, Riverside and Ainsworth rushed to the scene while local neighbors helped prevent spread to nearby buildings.
In Keota, 300 residents gathered at the high school auditorium for the annual corn banquet. John H. Greiner was crowned corn king after producing 155.18 bushels per acre on a ten acre plot, winning a blue ribbon and $25. The event celebrated Keota as a leading corn belt center with broad local support and a broadcast program through WSUT Iowa City.
In Chicago Navy Bows, INS reports no railway employees strike after 120 leading railway executives vote to withdraw notice of a 15 percent wage reduction.
At a Sigourney hearing before Judge Frank Bechly Sheriff H M Putnam was ordered to release Melvin Carl from the county jail. Carl had been jailed 30 days for driving without a license but a writ of habeas corpus secured his release. The judge delayed ruling on Sunday and the attorney L J Kehoe noted the original sentencing occurred that day.
Just before a steady rain, the county completed oiling on 43 miles of roads, with the board of supervisors and county engineer optimistic about winter and spring conditions. Total miles treated were 22.625 on graded roads and 19.38 on roads not graded, across multiple townships. Cost to the county was 8872.55, with property owners covering 3635.18. The year’s road program is nearly done except for Highland township awaiting next week.
The clerk of district court works to complete the November docket as the term opens Monday November 14 with Judge J G Patterson of Oskaloosa presiding. Today is the last day for attorneys to file cases and yesterday was the final day for serving papers in court actions for the coming term. New divorce filings include Lucille Bales versus William Bales with Theodore B Bailey attorney for the plaintiff.
At noon today pledges reached 3718.50 toward a 5150 goal for next year’s Y M C A support in Washington. Forty canvassers still work the list, rain halted efforts, and organizers plan a vigorous push next week to meet the total with pledged sums by ward: First 1114, Second 866, Third 729.50, Fourth 741, Rural 273.
Secretary O E Schmitt of the Chamber of Commerce says most stores will close on Armistice Day November 11 as they cooperate with the American Legion which favors general closures. A further announcement will follow after more merchants finalize plans for the holiday.
King George in Parliament review lauded President Roosevelt for guiding peace during the war crisis. The speech followed Commons approval of the government after defeating a censure motion over air raid preparedness. The king stated the US president’s influence aided the peace and expressed hope for a new era.
Jay Figgins of Kalona sues Fo Hotle of Keota for 5000 dollars in personal injury damages from an August 10 automobile accident between Kalona and Riverside. Plaintiff alleges negligence by the defendant. Eardley Bell of Wellman represents the plaintiff along with Adams Schlaerer and Nolan of Iowa City.
Condemned murderer John Deering trembled in the chair at the Utah state prison Salt Lake City as his heart rate spiked to 180 beats per minute. Dr. Stephen Besley reported the electrocardiograph showed the heart beat for 15.6 seconds after the fatal bullet struck, with the test conducted at Deering's suggestion.
Washington County Red Cross urges parents to bring children ages 9 to 24 months to listed treatment centers for free diphtheria immunization on scheduled dates. Centers include Dr McCreedy's office in Brighton, West Chester school, Crawfordsville school, Ainsworth school, Riverside public and parochial schools, Kalona, Wellman, and the Washington Y M C A with times ranging November 7 to 15. County Medical Society arrangements cover the immunization costs.
The eighteenth annual Buddy Poppy sale in Washington will donate all net profits to local veteran relief. A. K. Palmer Post 2808 explains funds fund groceries medical care clothing and aid for needy and disabled veterans in government hospitals and for widows and orphans. Volunteers urge public support with a hoped average donation of 10 cents per poppy.
A rainy audience at the Methodist church last evening did not dampen the zeal of the evangelistic gathering. Dr. Arthur Atack led singing, Dr. Fred Eastwood prayed, and Rev. W. N. Watlis urged that Christ is the Great Physician. He warned that the world is in shambles and urged faith in Jesus as the sole path to wholeness.
Iowa endures soaking rain with Des Moines reporting 1.30 inches on the day and towns from Keokuk to Decorah tallying over an inch. Temperatures stay above normal overall, but a colder spell is forecast for tonight ahead of Saturday football games as coats and blankets are advised.
Mayor Lloyd Lytie and the Iowa State Safety Council announced safety gains with a claim that one hundred lives were saved in highway crashes.
