Logan writer Jess McKenney reports finding three par snips whose roots braid nearly perfectly. In Des Moines two Black women were swindled by two Black confidence men who asked them to hold a money package as a guarantee and never returned with $49.
Lavern Attebury seven year old son of Harold Attebury suffered a compound fracture of the right elbow and a head injury when struck by a car driven by Vernon Larsen. He is in the Lutheran hospital.
Lester Stey of south of Armstrong reports a cornstalk reaching 27 inches with two well defined ears. He notes the stalk likely began growing in August and appears valid.
Mount Vernon reports that Lauritz Melchoir, Metropolitan Opera tenor, who was to appear on the Cornell college artist lecture program on November 17, cannot fulfill the engagement due to unavoidable circumstances. Sponsors have announced the cancellation.
In Maquoketa in 1900 the women of the Reformed church started a polling day meal. It proved popular and has continued each election. Tuesday’s menu includes sausage and chicken, steamed brown bread, and baked beans.
Cedar Falls hosts a four day training institute in the gymnasium of Iowa State Teachers College. The event runs today Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday under the guidance of Mary Luther Taylor Cedar Falls supervisor of recreation and state staff of the Works Progress Administration.
Dalton Christen, 20, of Audubon, fell from a ladder while painting the Audubon community building interior. He landed on a scaffold rake and suffered only a scalp scrape as yellow paint splashed on his face.
The coroner found Aeko Koen aged 41 of Meservey dead beside a road following an all day inquiry into a collision with an unknown vehicle driver.
Henry Mungoven, age five, was jailed after a reported trick theft in front of Blitz Hardware. He faced charges of driving while intoxicated, larceny of a key, and driving without a license.
Grinnell College hosts a homecoming event at the Kite House staged by the Wi Men's association. Returning grads recall Harry Hopkins, noted WPA administrator and Grinnell graduate, among the school’s most famous alumni.
Jess Pierce was arrested in East online Illinois and brought to Davenport after waiving extradition on perjury charges. A warrant signed by Grace Carlson alleged the Carlson daughter was 18 to obtain a license for a horse to Chester Francis. Pierce claimed years of acquaintance with the Carlson girl and believed she was of age.
Voters age 21 and over may cast ballots from morning until 8 PM with one ward polling place moved to the G A R room in the courthouse. Turnout expected to be average for an off year. 12,220 ballots prepared with 236 absentee votes already cast. Top contests include Gillette vs Dickinson for senator and Kraschel vs Wilson for governor with emphasis on county and legislative races.
At a Saturday afternoon meeting of the Washington bicycle unit of the safety council Eleanor Tucker was elected judge and Don Crossett prosecuting attorney to handle traffic ordinance violations by battalion members. Each violator may select a defending attorney. First two offenses earn warnings. punishment follows on a third conviction.
A Burlington passenger train and a Rock Island freight train collided in Council Bluffs injuring a two year old girl Sharon Ruth Vanderer daughter of a Forbes Missouri section foreman who suffered severe bruising. Two other Burlington train passengers en route from Omaha to Kansas City received minor injuries while both locomotives derailed and no passenger cars left the rails.
Kathryn Logan, formerly a student at A. I. C. in Davenport, has accepted a position in the offices of Bush and Bush, attorneys at law, in Davenport.
Dr. Edward Elsworth Blythe 67 died Saturday night at Washington county hospital of pneumonia. He lived in Riverside for 32 years and served as mayor and councilman. Survived by widow Lyda Hodge Blythe and son Lloyd. three stepchildren. foster son Thomas MacPowen. Funeral Tuesday at Riverside Methodist Church conducted by Dr. Ilion T. Jones.
Milo Shalla, a Riverside resident, was injured when his car left highway No. 218 and crashed into a tree about three miles northeast of Riverside Saturday evening. He was hospitalized in Mercy hospital, Iowa City, with a broken shoulder, a deep head gash, and multiple bruises. Andrew Brierrer helped at the scene.
Four Campbell children died from a Wednesday automobile collision and were buried in Indianola. Their mother Mrs Lyle Campbell remained at home semi conscious. Two other hospitalized children were reported not seriously hurt. Dr Blythe active in Riverside civic life and medical circles.
Washington reports the season's first snow with an inch on the ground by noon and steady accumulation. Iowa forecast a crisp day for Tuesday's vote though rain and mud may depress turnout. 900,000 expected to vote as Gov Kraschel and Geo Wilson seek the governorship while Gillette and Dickinson vie for the senate.
The American Legion drum corps will serve an oyster supper at 6:30 in the Legion rooms at City Hall. Charlee Denison Ed Squire and Rodney Arnold lead the arrangements. Members attending should bring instruments as the corps will play and discuss a possible reorganization.
County roll call chair Rose Reid said Red Cross activity should increase this week as canvassers begin full efforts. Donations reached 128 dollars with three dollar gifts from the Happy Hour club of Aine Worth and the Pansy Hill club southeast of town. Local stores plan window displays to boost contributions.
In Villisca the Methodist church burned rapidly Sunday morning trapping two hundred Sunday school pupils. The 42 year old brick veneer building was a mass of flames within ten minutes of discovery and reduced to ruins an hour later. Children calmly gathered their wraps and exited by nearest doors without panic.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hanson with Mrs. Hanson’s mother Mrs. H. H. Bissell traveled to Watseka Illinois yesterday. Mrs. Bissell plans to vote there tomorrow and they expect to return Tuesday afternoon.
Congregation says the donation and hymnals were bought recently and describe the scene as orderly. Church members estimate losses at 25000 dollars for property and hymnals.
Funeral services for Frank I. Wood a longtime Ainsworth resident were held at 2 p.m. at his residence near Ainsworth. The 69 year old died suddenly Saturday evening. Burial followed at Ainsworth Cemetery with pallbearers named. He was a farmer and contractor born in Mercer County Illinois. Survived by wife Rose Kupka two sons Earl and Blair two daughters Martha and Mrs Frank Glasgow, one brother Linus and one sister Mrs Will Crozier.
A car carrying seven youths from the Sigourney CCC camp left the road four miles west of West Chester at about three this morning. Driver Walter Randall of Keokuk and all occupants were from Lee county. Two youths Jess Finley 20 and Bill Stevens 17 suffered head cuts and bruises but were not seriously hurt. The crash allegedly occurred when the driver fell asleep as they returned from a Sunday home visit.

At a members meeting Trinity Lutheran Church discussed several pastor candidates to replace Rev. T. C. Melbohm who resigned to go to La Crosse Ind. Rev. Waterloo Iowa November 7 21 year old John Duff was killed when his car crashed head on with a truck driven by Guido Leonhart of Madison Wisconsin. The collision left Duff with a crushed head.
Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation reached a consent decree with the U.S. Justice Department in Washington on November 7. The decision claims both firms violated antitrust laws by altering their automobile financing methods without admitting guilt.
In Paris a 19 year old assailant named Herschel Szynazias wearing disguise walked into the German embassy and wounded third secretary Ernst von Rath twice, once in the lung and once in the liver before being jailed. The incident follows GermanJewish tensions in the era.
Mr and Mrs Cloyce Bogle and their sons Graham and Jim left after a two week stay at Dr C W McLaughlins home and with relatives. They traveled to Indiana for business then return via Tennessee the Ozark mountains and a southern route. Harold White went to Omaha Saturday to stay a week with his brother Clarence White at that home.
