Subpoenas and fear of administration actions energize testimony concerns at the unamerican activities inquiry led by Chairman Martin Dies. Meanwhile the Y M C A drive reports noon pledges totaling 2879 toward a 5150 goal with ongoing efforts to secure more through today and possibly tomorrow.
A column mentions Ottumwa resident John Wooden, 64, injured when a house section collapsed during rebuilding in windy conditions. In Keokuk, Raymond A. Smith of the fire department was trapped by a waterlogged pile and rescued after a second story floor collapsed, suffering shock and possible injuries.
Elmer Bonath a 46 year old Primghar resident died when a road roller toppled onto him after a bank collapsed on a grading project four miles southeast of Sutherland in O'Brien County. He leaves a wife one daughter and three sons.
Mrs. Vincent Smith, 33, lost four fingers and part of a hand when caught in a corn picker on her Manchester farm. Her husband freed her by cutting her hand loose with a pocket knife. she was formerly Beatrice Barry of Manchester.
Two sons of Mr and Mrs Lyle Campbell were killed in a truck auto collision on the Middle River bridge six miles north of Indianola. One victim about 20 drove the car and another boy was 12. Mrs Campbell's other two children were injured.
Ottumwa women activists plan to file a petition with the city council opposing Highway 63 rerouting proposals that would cut through Central Park. The highway commission has approved the reroute but favors piercing the park, a move objectors say would injure a distinctive city landmark.
Harry Pease sought a new parking space after his auto was damaged when Oler Jackman of Boone collided with it and went to jail for drunken driving. The car was repaired and returned to work. On Wednesday S. K. Palmer of Fort Dodge struck the vehicle and faced reckless driving charges.
Chariton voters defeat a measure to build and run a city gas plant by 877 no to 490 yes. The plan proposed financing with 120000 in state revenue bonds and included purchasing the existing Peoples Gas and Power Co. plant plus new construction.
The University of Iowa pathology department received a $10,000 grant from the John and Mary Markie Foundation to continue research on stopping human bleeding. Under Dr. H. P. Smith, work will test vitamin K's role in clotting and hemorrhage control for gall bladder patients.

Des Moines reports the state conservation commission sold 125,427 duck stamps in Iowa during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1938. The previous year saw 27,294 stamps sold, reflecting a large increase.
G. T. Grubb has exclusive Maytag dealer territory for much of Washington county and has set up residence at 602 West Washington Street. His family joins him as he plans to open an office soon. The Grubb family includes his wife and 15 year old twin sons Esten and Estel who attend Washington High School.
A writ of habeas corpus seeks release of Melvin Carl from Washington county jail. Judge Frank Bechly ordered a hearing tomorrow at nine in the Sigourney courthouse. Carl, jailed for operating a vehicle without a license, contends his 30 day sentence originated from a justice court judgment issued on a Sunday and that he was denied legal counsel.
The Stewart tract in the town's north part begins a $90 725 project with F B Dickinson Co of Des Moines as general contractor. J J Mayer arrives in Washington to supervise with Jay Sproatt as PWA inspector. About 2 500 cubic yards of dirt will be moved before winter. Labor will be hired through the Employment Office with workers registering first.
More than 1,100 Lorillard Tobacco employees ended a long strike and returned to work under 440 National Guard troops, a sheriff's force, and a 1,000-strong vigilante committee. CIO vote to resume work was 577 to 1, after Governor Davey ordered troops to restore order.
Bethlehem commandery Knights Templar conducted its annual inspection at the Masonic temple with Dr. Frederick C. Roe of Burlington as inspecting officer. Commander Cloyce Gault led an excellent review while visitors from Burlington Muscatine Oskaloosa and Mt Pleasant attended. A turkey dinner for members wives followed in the dining room.
DES MOINES Iowa's retail trade volume is five million dollars higher in 1938 than in 1937 according to Dean Lynden E Hoffman of Drake University College of Commerce and Finance He notes Iowa as a bright spot with eastern states trailing and adds that political changes are unlikely to greatly affect business.
Representatives of the Iowa farm bureau federation will attend a regional hearing in Kansas City November 7 to oppose railroads’ petition to raise feeder and stocker cattle rates. The railroads seek to restore prewar fat stock rates with proposed 15 percent rebates for feeders if finished stock is shipped from the same point and other requirements met. Russell Skinner of West Chester and May Nicholson of Washington obtained a marriage license here.
The employment office under A Faulkner will supply labor to the contractor. All applicants must register at Faulkner's office before working on the school building. The project is planned to continue through winter with standard precautions to maintain work quality.
Fifty people attended a Republican county women's meeting in Washington County at G A B hall. L J Kehoe urged practical voting, warned of potential class conflict, praised Senator Claire Dewey and Shaw for homestead act work, and stressed voting principles on November 8.
Rev W N Wallis spoke to a large youth crowd at the Methodist church on Four Wheels and No Brakes warning of self expression as false freedom. He urged youth to live God controlled lives and be worthy of elders trust. The talk drew on his navy days and youth experiences and prep for Words of Woe tonight with Autumn Glory on screen. Members and the men of the community were especially invited by Dr Atack.
On November 3 Premier Fumimaro Konoye of Japan warned foreign powers to stop victimizing China. The statement emphasizes Japan's stand amid rising tensions in the region and appeals to international actors to respect Chinese sovereignty.
Two rebel shells struck the U S embassy in Madrid during ongoing artillery bombardment of the city. The attack damaged the building and prompted emergency responses from local and international authorities.
Washington prepares to celebrate when Iowa highway fatalities reach 100 fewer than a year ago. President George Mohr and Mayor Lloyd Lytle arranged a bell and whistle celebration. The congregation praises Mrs Reister’s organ music and the choir director Mrs W F E Bond asks singers to attend rehearsals for a Christmas cantata.
Yesterday shells struck the Dutch legation killing eight people and wounding twenty others. Local authorities brace for further attacks as the incident draws international concern.
The Washington county safety council bicycle unit will hold a Saturday gathering at 2 PM at the Y M C A. President George Mohr announced the event to form a safety court where violations of safety rules will be tried. A. E. Baldrige will advise legally to keep proceedings proper.
