Garbage workers' union faces fine in Des Moines case
Polk County District Court Judge Gibson Holliday decertified the waste collectors' union as their bargaining agent and fined the union 51000 for contempt over a June 9 work stoppage. The agency sought fines for 48 striking workers, which Holliday did not impose due to union encouragement. Both workers and union found in contempt. under Iowa law the 48 could be barred from work for one year.

Red Oak men recover ancient Indian canoe near river
Red Oak Iowa Up I two men James Griffeth and Ronald Foreman recovered a nearly six foot long dug-out canoe buried in the East Nishnabotna River bank. Archaeology officials planned to study the vessel to estimate its age and obtain wood for carbon dating. Foreman found the canoe Sept 20 while airboating with his wife. the pair pulled it free with help from Griffeth.

Four Iowans found dead at rural Iowa intersection
