Washington choir to rehearse for Christmas cantata

All singers are urged to attend the opening rehearsal Sunday Nov 2 at 2 p.m. at Washington United Methodist Church. Rehearsals continue Sundays for the Dec 7 7 30 p.m. presentation of The Story of Christmas by Matthews. Sunrise Singers from Washington Community district will perform Jan 17 at the Iowa Music Education Association meeting at Hotel Fort Des Moines from 10 15 to 10 45 a m. Director is Berdena Bagby.

Packard resigns as Ford campaign finance chairman

Washington reports David Packard a wealthy California former deputy defense secretary has quit as finance chairman of President Ford's election campaign committee. Spokesman Peter Kaye said Packard submitted the resignation in a letter to Ford a few days ago. Ford campaign manager Bo Callaway expressed regret and noted the committee is more than $400,000 in the black.

Iowa City libel suit targets Daily Iowan candidate

Mary C. Neuhauser files a $20,000 libel suit in Johnson County District Court against The Daily Iowan and Student Publications Inc. The suit stems from a Wednesday article about campaign contributions to Neuhauser and four other City Council candidates. Defendant named includes the newspaper's owner.

Rosien unopposed for Washington Park Board seat

James C. Rosien, 41, teacher in the Washington Community School District, is unopposed in the six year Park Board election to succeed Don Minick who steps aside after 12 years including a chairmanship. Rosien emphasizes improving parks and facilities and the duty of qualified citizens in a democratic society.

Washington County Food Stamp Sale Dates Announced

The county lists three November sale days for food stamps in Washington. November 6 serves city residents, November 7 covers other areas, and November 21 is for all county residents. Purchases occur 9 30 to 11 30 at the Department of Social Services on 212 N Iowa Ave in Washington.

Haunted House Opens Later For Washington Jaycees

The Washington Jaycees announce their Haunted House at 313 N 4th Ave will open two hours later tonight due to city Halloween activities. Hours are 8 30 to 10 p m today and 6 30 to 9 30 p m Saturday the final night with over 500 visitors since Wednesday.

Riverside opens senior housing with community drive

An open house at Riverside's new senior citizens housing complex begins at 2 p.m. Sunday. The $240,000 project financed by Farmers Home Administration offers 15 apartments and a community room. Construction started July 8 with a groundbreaking ceremony and completed in just over 100 days. Community pledges supported the FmHA loan.

Iowa Prison System Faces Overcrowding and Funding Strains

UPI reports Iowa's corrections system, long touted as strong, faces severe funding shortages and aging facilities at Fort Madison and Anamosa. Ombudsman Ray Cornell argues overcrowding worsens safety and rehabilitation, urging new funding or a shift to community based corrections to relieve state prisons. He warns Fort Madison could reach capacity by end of 1976 and notes a large portion of inmates might be released with supervision to ease pressure.

Turner joins others in action against mail rate hikes

Iowa Attorney General Richard C. Turner and 10 other states filed a federal suit to block a proposed U S Postal Service rate increase claiming it is inflationary discriminatory and unlawful. They cite delays at the Iowa capitol and argue competition from private providers may be needed.

Annual service emblem banquet honors Iowa Southern employees
