Sioux City reports the drowning of John Zook, 14, after a swift current pulled him from the creek bank as tree branches swung by in rain-swollen Bacon Hollow. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs Fred Zook, with the father employed at a local packinghouse.
Floyd county offices will remain open today led by County Auditor Gue O. Michell who announced he would be available to receive homestead exemption claims. Other county officers pledged to keep their offices open all day to assist residents.
Darlene May Jeffers, age 13, wed Everett A. Brickey, 11 years her senior, a railroad switchman in Council Bluffs. The bride, shy and silent, hopes for a home and to finish school in the coming years.
Central National Bank and Trust Co enlarged its burglar alarm system Saturday noon. An alarm at police headquarters roused authorities who dispatched detectives and uniformed officers in pursuit through heavy traffic to the bank. Officers entered the bank but left without incident after a teller accidentally activated an alarm button.
Berlin reports Germany will withdraw from non intervention only after guarantees against a repeat of the Deutschland incident. German ships will fire on approaching Spanish planes and warships during the crisis. Almeria fortifications were said to be destroyed by a Nazi warship.
Force and fear marked Memorial Day as Chicago faces a steel strike. Police were mobilized after clashes left 28 officers injured and 563 workers or bystanders hospitalized. Four strikers lay critically wounded and Governor Horner warned of drastic action if trouble grows.
Four people died in weekend traffic accidents in Iowa raising year total to 175. The victims include John P. Armstrong and Ellis Paul of Chicago, Glen Clifford Archibald of Centerville, and an unidentified boy about 16 killed near Vinton.

L F Sigafoose 93, living five miles south of town, is one of four Washington Civil War veterans surviving Memorial Day. Born January 7, 1844 in West Virginia, he came to Washington in 1850, enlisted at 17 in the 22nd Iowa, and served in 24 battles and skirmishes including 47 days at Vicksburg. He recalls voting for Lincoln in 1864 and meeting the president during service.
Two Civil War veterans attended Washington's Memorial Day parade to review the procession. The event featured marching units, a municipal band, firing squads, Boy Scouts, a Legion color guard, decorating committees, and a return to Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries for wreath layings and brief talks by Dr. Arthur Atack and Robert Oakley. The day ended with ideal weather making it one of the finest observances in the town's history.
