Shenandoah reports W. J. Cahill, 76, president of a bank, was thrown through his car windshield when a tire blew out. He is recovering at Hand Hospital with a fractured arm and head cuts.
Dr Shailer Mathews dean emeritus of the University of Chicago divinity school spoke at Upper Iowa University Fayette graduation. A class of 29 seniors received diplomas this morning in the commencement ceremony.
Ackley High school officials announce sixteen pupils, ten boys and six girls, will travel to town city for the brain derby on June 7 and 8 after winning first place in the annual test against Seo high schools.
In Iowa City an art student driven petition calls for a mural program at the University of Iowa modeled after Iowa State College. The campaign argues murals should be included in the university expansion plans.
Clarence Mandela Adair four stepped from behind a parked car into a vehicle path. He suffered chest and foot injuries. Witnesses said the car stopped briefly, had a Polk county license, and the occupants were two elderly women.
Tabor college marks its first year since reopening as a junior college and announces an open house. The campus operates on a self help basis with 27 students farming 40 acres of vegetables and alfalfa and managing a dairy herd.
Miss Agnes Samuelson state superintendent will deliver the commencement address at Parsons College in Fairfield on June 8 Sunday evening. The Parsons Philharmonic Choir will perform Mendelssohn The Elijah. Don White of Fairfield will be crowned May queen Monday. College players present Dover Road by A A Milne in the evening.

A Treasury summary lists devices used for avoidance, with the president arguing moral not legal acceptance and criticizing high standing lawyers who advise clients on tax avoidance.

In Washington Secretary of State Cordell Hull met privately with German ambassador Hans Dieckhoff and Spanish ambassador Fernando de las Ri ca to urge a peaceful solution. Britain and France pressured Italy and Germany to halt actions like the bombardment of Almetia and to prevent further international complications.
In Poplar Bluff Missouri a bus overturned near the Arkansas border killing the driver L. A. Hines and injuring seven passengers. In California a Greyhound bus from Los Angeles to San Francisco collided with a tank truck near Delmar killing H. P. Sanford a Navy chief petty officer and injuring sixteen sailors and a truck driver.
Mr and Mrs William Shannon visited R Ed Shannon's home yesterday for a short time as they drive east on their honeymoon trip.
Attorney L. J. Kehoe, active in Washington County politics, moved his office from Wellman to Washington today. He rents rooms on the second floor of the Jeffrey Building above Crane Grocery, with furniture moved by truck. Kehoe plans to work in Washington three to four days weekly while keeping Wellman as home, with his family remaining there for now. His daughters Laura and Helen attend Wellman high school, and his son Joe studies at the University of Iowa.
Amelia Earhart Putnam and Capt. Fred J. Noonan started the first leg of a planned equatorial flight around the world. They lifted off at 5:55 AM EST from Miami Municipal Airport for San Juan Puerto Rico and reported everything okay as they departed.
The church calls secretary and Rev. W. MM. Berry along with previous pastors to be present and participate in the observance. Members and friends are asked to join in the event.
Mrs. Jesse Shalla thanks neighbors who plowed about 60 acres on the Shalla farm yesterday afternoon with tractors and teams, finishing before night. The volunteers named include Joe Kerr, Joe Sonkup, Clem Shalla, Charles Shalla, John Shells Jr, Dewey Weeks, Hubert Reranek, Elmes Brennemen, Howard Fisher, Merie Kailaus, Harold Prebyl, and George Schultz’s brother. Mr. Shalla recently died from injuries in a runaway accident, and work had lagged on the farm.
In Banford Maine on June 1 a baby thought dead for ten hours was resuscitated by an undertaker who had begun embalming the infant. The child was revived and given a good chance to live.
Washington marked Memorial Day with high praise from Judge Charles A. Dewey and local leaders. Weather cooperated with cloudless skies and ideal temperatures as cemeteries hosted eloquent tributes by Dr. Arthur Atack and Robert Oakley. The parade drew over thirty décor volunteers, led by the Woman's Relief Corps, with strong American Legion participation and two Civil War veterans. Kenneth Carris named next year’s parade chair.
William H. Anderson, 73, prominent Ainsworth resident, died today at noon at his home. Born January 30, 1852 in West Virginia, he lived in Kansas Missouri before moving to Washington County in 1874 and retiring to Ainsworth in 1912. He leaves two sons, a daughter, and a late wife. Funeral Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Ainsworth Methodist church, burial in the local cemetery.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce plans a large event with free wiener sandwiches and coffee in Central Park and two free showings of The Man in Blue at the State theater. Charles George chairs the committee with Harry Sowden and Ralph Scott. Charles W. Davis directs food service. The high school band will perform in the park from 1:30 to 2:30, and a courthouse drill will follow. Thousands are expected to attend for free food, entertainment, and store bargains.
Director Maurife Braytog announces the high school band’s second annual lawn concert on the east lawn at o o clock. The program includes marches and overtures by Murry, Suppe, Paraphrase on Military, and a group of three marches culminating in Stars and Stripes Forever performed by the Orange and Black band.
Harley B. Noel was ordered bound over to the district court at the September term under a 500 dollar bond by Justice J. B. Bovee after a hearing this morning. The charge cited intent to do great bodily harm with complainant Or an Warren of Ainsworth.
