Death of E. G. Fox Recalls Old Days of Narrow Gauge Rail
Edgar Greenfield Fox a longtime railway man and agent at Washington Iowa died. Born 1860 in Ohio he worked for the Iowa Central and narrow gauge lines before joining the Burlington system at Washington about 45 years ago. The Fox name was tied to the Fox Flyer passenger train and to Washington’s Fox Theater later known as the Fox. He was married to Mary A. Park and survived by two daughters Mrs. Claire Dewey and Mrs. Will Hemmings of Washington.

Union Leader Forecasts Steel Strike If Roosevelt Refuses Pact
May 31 report from Washington says Earl J. Forbeck, president of the Pittsburgh district of the iron, steel and tin workers union, announced a national strike next week to press Roosevelt to honor unrestricted collective bargaining. A rank and file committee condemned government supervised elections as unenforceable and demanded a White House conference with the American Iron and Steel Institute to secure bargaining rights. If refused, they warned, it means bloody war.

Holiday accidents claim 260 lives nationwide
By United Press Airplane, auto and boat accidents killed 260 people as crowds sought relief from heat. Eight of the victims were from Iowa. Airplane crashes caused seven deaths and 15 injuries nationwide. Mrs. Robert Bruce of Rolfe sister of Mrs. F M Ritchey will spend the weekend here and stay until Tuesday.

Children Crushed At World Fair Gate In Chicago
Thousands of children crowded the gates on a special day at the world fair in Chicago. Emergency calls went out as crowds surged, gates opened, and about half a million people swarmed the grounds. By noon over 50 injury cases were treated at the emergency hospital.

Funeral of S. W. Shannon Friday
Funeral services for Samuel W. Shannon will be held Friday afternoon with a 1 o'clock service at the Universalist church in Mt. Pleasant and a 3 o'clock service at the Shannon home in Washington. He died after an acute heart attack suffered three weeks earlier. Surviving family includes wife Misa Edi Morris, daughter Alice now Mrs. Everette Jarvis, his mother Mrs. Alice Morris, and several siblings. He was known for a jovial disposition and lifelong rural roots in Iowa and South Dakota.
