May heat shattered Iowa records with Des Moines and surrounding areas reporting 104 degrees or higher. Carroll and Sheldon saw 106, while Dubuque logged a 60 degree low as drought persists and crops face damage.
Boston will host an open conference by the United States Institute for Textile Research focusing on warp sizing of cottons and rayons. The program highlights advances in colloid and physical chemistry and their application to textile sizing processes.
Beverly Hills remarks by Secretary Wallace describe the farming sector as demanding and self-reliant. He jokes that farmers are too efficient, urging restraint to avoid ruin while acknowledging their hard work and industry.
Martha Elmira Spargo Haifley aged 74 died at home after a month long illness. She was a Grace Hill Moravian church member and is survived by two sons John and Harry Haifley of Washington, a daughter Mrs G E Taylor of Ainsworth, two brothers George Spargo and Alex Spargo, a half sister Mrs Kart Hoaglan, a step sister Miss Elsie Spargo, and a daughter Martha Jane died in 1892. Burial at Elm Grove cemetery after services at Shermans funeral home conducted by Rev W J Stevens.
The Washington Municipal band will launch a 14‑concert summer season Saturday June 2 in Central Park at eight. A Sunset Park series starts June 10 with 10 concerts. The 38 piece group is composed of Washington citizens led by Milburn McKay, with Cloyd Garrett as president. The band also contracted for Riverside Wednesday gigs and has already drawn large crowds.

E G Fox longtime community business figure dies at 614 East Second Street at age 73. Former Burlington station agent and local road manager who later led Washington Telephone and Fox and Dewey Shoes. Active in Knights of Pythias and Modern Woodmen. Funeral Friday at L A Jones with Elm Grove Cemetery burial. Survived by widow and two daughters Claire Dewey and Will Hemmings.
Iowa City reports Mrs Marian Clark, 98, marking Memorial Day with memories of four wars the nation fought. She is among nine surviving widows whose husbands served, and she is said to be the only widow of a veteran from the War of 1812 west of the Mississippi. She married during the Civil War, was widowed before the Spanish American War, and aided her Red Cross chapter in World War I.
Hopkinton Iowa renews its claim as the first town to observe Memorial Day citing a 1865 monument shaft and 44 names of soldiers from Lenox College. Residents contrast with Columbus Mississippi which marked May 30 1864. noting the first national observance was in 1865.
