Des Moines reports a brutal heat wave claiming five Iowa lives and harming crops. Temperatures hit 109 degrees in Washington and May registered just 1.29 inches of rain. Dust storms swept from the west as officials warned of continuing heat and severe conditions.
The county faces uneven water supply as Wellman reports nightly pump trouble and dry wells. West Chester residents share forested wells to fight a fire. Ainsworth and Crawfordsville show mixed conditions while Riverside reports many shallow wells drying up. Brighton imposes city water limits.
Washington teen Billy Cox ranked highest among class two snare drummers at the national high school drum contest in Des Moines with an excellent rating. Kathryn Little and Charlotte Squire received awards at Washington high school 1934 commencement for junior college tuition. Kathryn won the George and Ella Griffith scholarship funded by their estate, chosen by faculty. Charlotte earned the American Legion Auxiliary scholarship covering two semesters to two years.
Evelyn Turner delivered the valedictory and Sarah Marie Davis the salutatory at the Washington high school commencement. Davis praised community support and emphasized character, dependability, and personal responsibility for the class's future. Turner spoke on the need to apply their education and maintain integrity.
Washington high school honored its largest class with 112 seniors receiving diplomas while 17 students earned college diplomas. The event drew a full audience in theMethodist church auditorium despite the heat, as the junior college contingent processed to their seats.
Principal Miss Della Patton notes rising graduates at Washington High School. Over 50 years from 1870 to 1920 total graduates reached 1,268, and since 1920 there have been 1,296 graduates. The 15th class surpasses earlier yearly totals.
