The summer music school at the high school gym, directed by Milburn A. McKay, runs June 5 to August 12. Registration for instrumental students is on June 2 from 2 to 4 and June 3 from 9 to 12. Ten weeks tuition is described as small.
Gale Fisher and Marie Cannon of this city earned degrees at the Iowa State Teachers College spring exercises held Monday morning May 29. Fisher earned a Bachelor of Science in Education and Cannon a rural school education diploma among 372 graduates. Dr. Charles H. Judd of the University of Chicago gave the commencement address.
The Farm Bureau Band prepares for a rehearsal in Ottumwa next Sunday following a prior event. A concert is scheduled for 2 PM with band members arriving by 10 AM. Charles K Hearst will speak as state president and national vice president, and a 10 cent admission is charged per person and per car to help cover costs. Washington County reports nearly 100 band members and new uniforms are due this week. A one way traffic plan will improve parking and reduce jams, and motion pictures will be shot during the day.
Special correspondence from Fort Des Moines reports Washington county’s first CCC quota of ten men traveling from Ottumwa to Des Moines for medical exams and vaccinations. The group, in 774 company, begins military-style daily routines with 5:30 wake, inspections, physicals, vaccinations, and wide work hours, awaiting permanent camp assignment possible at Mt. Pleasant.
The Health Unit conducts examinations for children under six to be held June 2 at 1 30 p m at the Ainsworth schoolhouse. Weighing and measuring of babies is optional and birth certificates will be available for babies whose homes appeared in the papers during the year.
Tom McElhinney of Washington tied for third in the pole vault and tied for fourth in the high jump at yesterday’s track meet in Ft. Madison. The event drew many competitors from Iowa Illinois and Missouri.
Arthur Ewing of Wellman underwent an appendicitis operation this morning at Washington County Hospital.
Primghar Iowa May 1 1 2 2 farmers arrested after farm sale disorders were arraigned on contempt of court charges before Judge Earl Peters. All but two were charged with not guilty pleas and trials set for June 5. Charles Anders and Hermann J Warm released after charges dismissed for insufficient evidence. State represented by Leon Powers and L C Lampman. Defense by Nelson Miller Le Mars and M Smith Cherokee. Smith father of County Attorney James D Smith.
The Little Demons beat the Easy Aces 9 to 4 and Troop F defeated the Orioles 30 to 8 last night at cavalry field with the second game under lights. Next week’s schedule lists multiple matches at Junkin field troop field and other venues.

A Memorial Day dinner program at the Y's Men’s Club featured Dr. A B Hender of Davenport discussing Memorial Day significance and war history. The event included a dramatized Shooting of Dan McGrew skit, musical solos by Mrs Lewis Warren, and the installation of new officers led by Lee Holland.
An hour long concert directed by Neil Humble and managed by Hal Reister delighted a large Central Park crowd yesterday evening. The Memorial Day observance closed with a high note as skies cleared after days of rain and the daytime program ran before noon.

A Memorial day program drew a good sized crowd at the Crawfordsville school auditorium on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. Carl W. Kletz of Washington delivered the address praising past service and urging patriotism, with musical selections by local bands, choirs, and a clarinet solo. Graves were decorated as volleys and taps marked the end of ceremonies.

Kansas report says eleven convicts who mutinied at the Kansas City state penitentiary freed six of their hostages as they moved across the region. Night watchman Otto L. Durkee was killed in Chetopa on the escape day. Warden Pra ther and two guards were later released near Welch Oklahoma as authorities across four states were told to shoot to kill.
Thirty two men competed in the Memorial day golf tournament at the country club divided into teams led by Leslie Eicher and Victor Westphal. The Eicher team won with a 1403 to 1451 total. Westphal carded 71 for 16 holes, Wells and Wolf each 76, and Dr W J Alcorn had the highest card at 112. A rare band concert from the Washington Municipal band entertained players on the clubhouse porch.
In Washington on May 31 J P Morgan was shown to have realized seven million dollars in profits and possibly forty six million in paper profits on a United Corporation issue. A list of 200 preferred purchasers was revealed. The inquiry entered its second week as Ferdinand Pecorra's program was supported in a secret Banking and Currency Committee meeting.
Miss Helen Elder of Detroit Michigan is expected this evening to visit at the home of her uncle J O Elder. She is a daughter of Mrs Arthur Elder.
