County Extension Director Jim Frier presents Amur Corktree Phellodendron amurense as a rare but excellent shade tree for Iowa. It reaches about 45 feet, has corky bark, and yellow fall color but poor color retention. River birch Betula nigra offers strong bronze borer resistance and winter interest. both species receive planting and care guidance.

An ISU extension economist says pork producer prices look favorable into early 1973 with futures showing potential for higher prices than recent years. May quotations were about 3.50 above April and 8 above a year ago, with forecasts near 28 dollars in Iowa by July before a seasonal decline.

Reports note Sandi Schroeder, a Mid-Prairie High graduating senior, received the $500 1972 Asbury United Methodist Church scholarship at the May 21 service. Kent Fordyce of Mankato, Minnesota, visited Wellman en route to Muscatine. Lonnie Yoder earned the Phi Eta Sigma Award at Drake University with a 4.0 GPA. Vacation church schools run May 30 to June 9 at Asbury, Wellman Baptist, and Wellman Mennonite locations. Chief Warrant Officer David Harmon and family visit Wellman. Harmon returns from Vietnam and will depart for Ft. Campbell.
