A car owned by June V. Pence of Wellman burned severely after a 1:30 a.m. fire call to Old Highway 92 by the livestock sale barn. Local firefighters and Farmers Mutual Insurance responded.
Democratic candidate Dick Clark will speak at the Captain's Table in Washington on Thursday June 1. A dinner at 6 30 p.m. with reservations via 653 2001 aims to meet as many Washington County residents as possible. Guests should arrive by 8 p.m. for discussions.
Sheriff's deputies searched the Colorado River banks for John Lesler 21 of Sioux City who drowned when his car left U S 24 near Glenwood Springs and plunged 25 feet into the river on Sunday. His wedding to be held in Nevada prompted the trip.
Des Moines police investigate after House Speaker William Harbor reports a rented car used in his lieutenant governor campaign was stolen from near the Statehouse. Harbor says he found the car gone this morning and learned an aide who recently married had borrowed it for moving over the weekend.
The National Safety Council projected 530 to 630 deaths in traffic from Friday 7 p.m. to Monday midnight. A United Press International tally at 3 a.m. EDT counted at least 536 deaths in traffic with 134 drownings, 17 plane deaths, and 67 other fatalities for a total of 754.
The Washington square area meeting for building owners and store managers moves to 7 p.m. on May 31 at the YMCA Community Room to discuss proposed color design for storefront renovations. Everett R. Burham a 77 year old Washington Iowa resident recounts meeting a young Captain Windsor in South Hampton during World War I. He says the future King Edward VIII treated him to dinner and drinks and later congratulated his troops. Burham notes the prince abdicated in 1936 and died in Paris at 77.
United Press International reports weather for OWA: clear and cooler tonight with lows near 40 in the northeast and mid 40s in the south. Wednesday brings fair skies and a bit warmer, with highs in the 70s on the west and 60s in the east.
