Nixon arrives in Warsaw for final Moscow trip leg

President Nixon lands in Warsaw amid a warm welcome and Polish flags along a five mile motorcade route. Bombings in Tehran delayed his departure but do not appear aimed at him. He will report to Congress later tonight after the ceremony and wreath laying.

District nine Pork Appreciation Day set for June 13

The District Nine Pork Producers Association will host Pork Appreciation Day at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday June 13 at the Junior High School. The event features a district pork queen selection, guest restaurant operators, and nominations for statewide Master Pork Producer awards. Red Cross swim opens on June 19

The Washington County Red Cross learn to swim program opens June 19 at the Washington Municipal pool. Director lineup includes Mrs. Grover Rosenkild and Kim Steele with Milo Steele Jr. as water safety chairman. Three morning periods run at 9:10, 9:50 and 10:35 with schedule by last name and school group.

Record 445 FILE FOR AUGUST PRIMARIES IN IOWA

Des Moines reports a record filing day as 445 candidates submit nomination papers for 164 offices. 185 filed Tuesday. 277 seek state House and 129 Senate seats. The American Independent Party joins with 3 candidates led by Robert Dilley. Incumbents and party contenders line up for governor and congressional seats across six districts.

The Washington Municipal Swimming Pool will open at 1 p.m. Saturday for the season with unchanged rates and state sales tax. Admission fees vary by age and season tickets are priced from 5.15 to 30.90 dollars. Family night swims may be added if requested, while lifeguards include James Harris and others.

Girl Witness Tells Senate Ads Mislead Kids

An 11-year-old girl Dawn Ann Kurth testified at a Senate hearing that many television ads aimed at children are bad. She noted ads often emphasize look and taste over product merit and urged drug firms to stop marketing vitamins as yummy and teach safety about medicines.

Tryouts Open for Midsummer Night's Dream at YMCA

Youth from college to junior high are invited to drama tryouts in the Washington YMCA Community Room. Sessions run Thursday to Saturday 7 to 10 p.m. This follows planned summer programs and volunteer orientations on June 1 and June 7 at 10 am, plus training June 12 to 14.

Roberta Schoonover formerly Roberta Batterson announces candidacy for County Auditor of Washington County. A Washington native, she holds a B A in Social Science from the University of Iowa and emphasizes county business. Campaign manager is her husband Jon Schoonover with Shirley Brown as finance chairwoman.

Rev Pace to Depart Washington UMC for Jackson Post

Rev. Tom Pace, longtime associate pastor of Washington United Methodist Church, will become associate pastor at Capitol United Methodist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. His final sermon here is set for June 18. The Jackson church has about 1,500 members and a history of open doors to Black residents. Pace has led community work, including youth programs, and holds roles in the Cedar Rapids United Methodist Youth and local groups. No replacement is announced. a minister shortage may delay next assignment.
