Iowa private colleges seek end to tax exemptions
Dr. Irwin Lubbers, president of the Iowa Association of Private Colleges and Universities, says 28 privately supported Iowa colleges should end tax exemptions on income producing property. He proposes the 1969 General Assembly set a date to terminate the exemption, with holdings existing when law passes remaining exempt. The plan includes state need-based scholarships for both private and state colleges, funded at about $300,000.

Three parades are set for Washington's 125th anniversary from June 9 to 14. The Ridiculous Day parade starts Tuesday at 1 15 pm, followed by a large Thursday parade with floats rented or kit forms, and a Saturday June 12 antique car parade at 2 pm organized with the Southeast Iowa Antique Car Club. Cable cut disrupts long distance service near Riverside
A bulldozer cutting a county road project damaged an underground telephone cable about four miles south of Riverside this morning. Long distance service to Washington, Ainsworth, Crawfordsville and West Chester was down for several hours, with Bell Telephone Co. crews estimating repair by mid afternoon. The Evening Journal teletype service also failed for a few hours.
