Iowa faces sluggish growth as older residents stay and births fail to keep pace. Census data show Iowa up 2.8 percent from 1950 to 1960 and 2.7 percent from 1930 to 1940, the smallest gain in the western north central group among seven states.
A Washington Journal photo features Lincoln school alumni who will attend the twenty fifth anniversary of their Washington High School graduation. Names include Clarence Jacobs Paul French Walter Barnett Vere Wenger and many others with teacher Elizabeth Klein listed among the group.
Iowa City Frank Stansler a Swisher dance hall operator filed in district court to oust Mayor G C Chadima. Stansler says Chadima was never elected by ballot and has harassed him for running a dance hall in apparent violation of a void town zoning or Sunday dancing law.
William Conley, 23, of Tipton drowned while swimming in the Cedar river about two miles east of town. He had been doing tiling work and went on a picnic. He was considered a good swimmer but may have been affected by recent tooth extraction.
The national safety council forecasts that at least 400 people may lose their lives over the Memorial weekend as Americans honor war dead. The forecast hinges on motorists' response to the council's appeal for protection for the living as well as honor for the dead.
Washington residents are seeing warmer days with temperatures close to 90 degrees. Yesterday's high reached 90 at 1 PM while the overnight low was 69 degrees.
Alexandria Egypt May 29. Max Schmeling famed heavyweight champion and top prizefighter was killed in Crete while serving as a Nazi parachute soldier. Reports say he was captured and killed after seizing a wounded soldier's rifle to escape.
British observers in London say Crete faces a desperate situation as Nazi air reinforcements batter Major General Freyberg and his troops. German sea-borne troops and pounded defenses threaten a grim stand, with evacuation unlikely and the Royal Navy unable to halt all convoys.
The Middle East command said British forces pulled back in Crete to positions east of Suda Bay. The withdrawal followed continued Royal Air Force efforts to blunt the German airborne invasion with bombing.
The article proposes a modernization at Washington county hospital to expand space for mothers and infants. Washington's Memorial day program begins Friday at 9 with a half hour concert in Central Park by the Municipal band directed by Milo Sorden. After the concert the parade moves at 10 to Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries for short programs and Taps by buglers.

He warned the East Coast may face gasoline free Sundays unless southern oil field transportation shortages improve. Ickes suggested daylight saving time nationwide and emphasized aluminum use over luxury power use. He noted Roosevelt could invoke emergency powers to conserve power if voluntary efforts fail.

Mrs. John Strain of Ainsworth died at her home this morning after years of ill health. She was 75 and born March 21, 1868 in Washington county. Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 30 PM at the Methodist church in Ainsworth, with Rev. John Nye in charge. Arrangements are by L A Jones Funeral Home. Surviving are her husband and five children Darrell and Fred of Ainsworth Otto of Albia and Mrs Merle Osborne and Mrs Iva Armstrong of Ottumwa.
President Roosevelt asked the Senate to ratify a revised power treaty with Canada permitting diversion of Niagara River waters above Niagara Falls for power during the defense emergency.
Ainsworth yesterday voted a new six to one franchise renewal for the Iowa Southern Utilities company. The tally stood 119 for and 21 against. The town lies in ISU district under Henry Little with headquarters at Columbus Junction.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden outlined Britain’s postwar goals at Mansion House. He urged a peace grounded in Roosevelt’s four freedoms and military political terms to bar Germany from dominating Europe. The plan also calls for social security abroad and coordinated action with the United States and other nations to stabilize economies and prevent famine and price shocks.
Rev. George Pennington announces a daily vacation Bible school at the West Chester Methodist church. It runs Monday to Friday from nine to three starting June 2, ending June 6 with an evening program. Open to local elementary grade students.
The Y M C A will be open on Friday from two o'clock to 7 30 in the evening. This schedules a late afternoon to early evening window for use of facilities and programs.
A crash at the junction of roads 92 and 218 east of Ainsworth sent E K E Hook 61 of Wichita to court after pleading guilty to failing to stop at a stop sign and paying a ten dollar fine plus costs. Harry A Zweifel 24 of St Louis was not at fault. Other incidents included a San Diego man bruised in Wellston, a collision near Highland Center schoolhouse involving a barefoot unlicensed driver, and a rear end crash on the town’s west side with minor injuries and about 53 dollars in damages.
