Tractor accident claims life of Carl Lowe in Johnson county
Carl Lowe aged 28 from Sutliffe was killed when he rolled from a tractor and was run over after the machine toppled into a ditch. He was teaching Joe Keneeny to drive the tractor on a highway near Sutliffe in Johnson county.

Landowner Ernest Moore Paid 40 Rent Yearly for Land
Ernest L Moore of Sheldahl a longtime tenant farmer had paid 40 yearly rent for 10 acres he owned. He had also rented 40 acres from his brother in 1912 until the brother’s death in 1940. Lawyers found Ernest owned 10 acres since their father’s death more than 25 years ago.

Judge P J Siegers heard probate testimony in the claim of Mrs Emma Maxwell against the Lee Hanna estate. All parties rested except one issue and the case was continued to June 3 for proof of crop year 1939 40 corn raised on the claimant farm. High water from more than three inches of rain inundated farms and washed out bridges and railroad tracks across northeast Iowa. The Turkey river rose seven feet at Elkader and two Pony creek bridges were washed out. Five cattle died from lightning on a farm near Marquette and a Milwaukee Road passenger train was delayed four hours due to washed tracks between Clayton and nearby areas. In Fayette county the Turkey river flooded Rock Island railroad tracks between Elgin and West Union with corn fields washed away south of McGregor.
