Des Moines officials report Memorial Day poppy sales on downtown streets by the American Legion auxiliary and council raised 2636.02 dollars. The proceeds will fund Legion welfare work.
Marshalltown's 1939 Tallcorn exposition made a profit for the first time in years with gross receipts of 6267 dollars against expenses of 5800 dollars.

Theodore Thompson held in Wright county jail on threats to extort in a case tied to the Millard Service auditing firm with Amos and Otto Schreck of Des Moines. The trio is accused of attempting to victimize store clerks facing shortages.
Smoke seeped from pine walls as five of eight Price children died in a Tama city home fire. Richard Price, 11, escaped after smelling smoke three times and investigating, while Jack 15 and Thomas 13 were out at a movie with parents downtown shopping. The fire’s origin remains unknown.
One secretary Leigh Soule of the Y M C A announced today that the Y will open at one o clock Memorial Day and stay open for the rest of the day.
Washington county ministerial association elected Rev. Paul Hang of Wellman as president and Rev. Vernon Butler of Keota as vice president. Leigh Soule of the Y M A was named secretary and treasurer. Members shared life stories during the program.

No rural or city mall mail deliveries Tuesday in observance of Memorial Day. Stamp window remains open for stamp sales only from eight to ten in the morning.
Ralph Woods buys first poppy as Washington poppy sales total 254.32 dollars, up about 25 dollars from last year. Eleanor Swift wins first prize for selling the most poppies among seventeen children. Mary Voorhees and others receive prizes.
Mrs. J. M. Stewart died this morning at her home three miles southeast of Ainsworth after four months of illness. Funeral Wednesday at two at the residence with burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Survived by husband, seven children, a brother, fourteen grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. Born December 26 1865 to Thomas and Anna Lawson Colthurst. She married J. M. Stewart October 4 1882.
The Whisker club reports 220 members with three Washington businesses joining the club at 100 cents each. New members signed since Saturday include Daryl Burham John Winga C Gilmore Walter Rukgaber and more. Chairman Al Goddard welcomes the latest signups and notes a member’s tongue in cheek beard remark.

A man suspected of a fraudulent check scam appeared in Washington last Friday cashing two five dollar bad checks. Sheriff Putnam reports more victims may come forward as descriptions from other towns surface. He deposited a $136 check on Farmers State Savings Bank of Independence Iowa as cash and left with no funds. the name on the check was Charles A Adams. The suspect used various aliases including James A Stout and C A Laird and is described as 35 to 40, dark complexion, 5 6, stout, posing as a farmer with a pleasant demeanor. He has worked in Atlantic Des Moines Perry Ames Newton and other towns.
Cars driven by Urban Te Bock Horst of Kalona and C F Hershberger of Iowa City collided at the Methodist church corner in Kalona Saturday afternoon. Both vehicles were considerably damaged. Hershberger had a slight cut on his head, according to the sheriff's office report.
It is announced today that applications can be made now for enrollment in the CCC camps for July. Applications should be made at the county welfare office at the courthouse.
Final plans for Washington Memorial Day observance include a two section parade from the square to Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries where hundreds of soldiers will have graves decorated. Programs at the cemeteries feature music prayers and talks by John Owen and Lt W G Eldridge.
The new cemetery road pavement will be opened for use Tuesday. Announcement made by Jay Sproatt, resident W. P. A. engineer, and contractor Robert C. Risk.
Rev William M Nichols of United Presbyterian church delivered the bac calaureate at Washington high and junior college urging class of 1939 to lead with Christian fidelity His sermon compared life to boats and urged graduates to be power boats steering by Jesus Christ and the Cross.

Mr and Mrs J D Hartzler of Daytonville welcomed twins early today a boy and a girl. The boy weighed 4 1 4 pounds and was placed in the county hospital portable incubator. The girl weighed 7 1 2 pounds and stayed in normal nursery care. Aila Hiltunen, maternity nurse, was summoned about 4:40 this morning to operate the incubator.

Chief of Police Jay Brown said an abandoned bicycle was found on Second Street near the Carria plant. It is not one of the recently stolen bikes, and the bike is at the city hall.
