Memorial Day ceremonies will include a dedication of a city war memorial in the public square, donated by Eeitherville Service Star War Matters and costing over $4,000. Five of 47 Council Bluffs fire and police applicants had jail records, with one fingerprint check revealing prior offenses.
Melcher, Iowa plans Memorial Day services with three Civil War veterans attending. Robert Millen 92 and William Vernon 90 from Melcher and Anthony Snyder 92 from Lacona will join local events in Marion county, where about 1500 residents anticipate honoring veterans.
Tipton Cedar County Sheriff W. W. Christian, a Democrat, accuses Republican leaders and state Public Safety Commissioner Karl W. Fischer of conspiring to appoint a typist for issuing licenses without his consent. He refuses to issue new driver licenses until the dispute is resolved.
Francis Thompson, 28, of New Hampton, was held after his automobile stalled on Chicago Great Western railroad tracks. Frank Mullen, night marshal, arrested Thompson when he summoned a garage to help remove the vehicle from the rails.
United Press notes a holiday weekend toll of at least 252 fatalities across the nation from auto accidents fires plane crashes gas and other causes as the period ends. Among the victims are 136 highway deaths 50 drownings and 66 from miscellaneous causes. A freak electrocution of 32 year old Warren Gatson of Chicago involved a home made device used to catch worms for a fishing trip. In Iowa at least a dozen holiday deaths were reported including 28 year old Harry Wickhorst of La Crosse Wisconsin who died after an auto train collision near Jordan Iowa.
A package of groceries purchased with worthless checks linked to Charles A. Adams was found at a Washington restaurant and reported to Sheriff H. M. Putnam. Adams said he would collect later, but did not return.
George Mann 63 a Brighton native died last night at his Iowa City home. He leaves his wife and son Floyd Mann. Funeral services will be held at Washington Methodist church Wednesday at 2 30 p.m with Dr. Arthur Atack and Dr. EF Voight in charge.
Richard Greiner a 35 year old farmer was seriously injured in a tractor accident on his farm in 76 township seven miles northeast of Keota yesterday afternoon. He was cranking a left in gear tractor with a cultivator attached when both machine and implement passed over him while he prepared to return to the field. The attending physician said rubber tires on the tractor helped save his life.
Mr and Mrs J W Fields and children Jack and Joan visited Mt Union on Sunday to spend time with friends in a social outing.
Reports say Smith took off from Old Orchard Beach Maine in a small airplane bound for Europe. Weather deteriorated with a snow storm off Newfoundland and no sighting clues ended with the assumption he crashed in the Atlantic. Lights at Croydon airfield stayed on until late awaiting word.
Community leaders from the park board city council Chamber of Commerce and Centennial commission show growing interest in a lighted fountain for Central Park to mark Washingtons centennial It would require about 2500 with 600 from the park board 200 from the chamber and a similar city match planning underway for funding installation and maintenance Superintendent Perry L Jordan to supervise the project and possible relocation of the existing fountain to Sunset Park
The Y's Men's club sponsors the public supervised playground with Clarence Logan as chair and Ted Brown and Lewis Warren as members. Funds are not secured yet and community gifts are welcome. The playground opens Monday June 19 after local Bible schools end, using the vacant lot on South Fourth Avenue by Lincoln grade school with George Mohr directing activities for boys. A girls director is not yet secured. Heights school equipment will be moved to the site for summer use.
Glenn Eldridge addresses a Memorial Day crowd at Elm Grove cemetery praising American security earned by soldiers who sacrificed for national unity. He honors veterans, recalls varied fates in war, and underscores the living duty of citizens to remember the fallen. (Continued on page 2)
John Owen urged independence of thought in a Woodlawn cemetery speech, arguing that using reason is essential to honor the sacrifices of the war dead. He warned against drift and propaganda and urged citizens to confront national and international troubles with disciplined thinking.

Moscow reports a decision on joining the three power alliance with France and England. Foreign Minister Molotov was expected to announce in a Supreme Soviet speech that Russia would enter the proposed three=party treaty to oppose aggression. Meanwhile Mrs. David McCartney improves at her daughter's home.
