Federal District Judge Charles A. Dewey administered the oath to John K. Valentine of Centerville, newly appointed federal district attorney for southern Iowa. Valentine, 35, begins a four year term starting May 19 with an annual salary of 5600 dollars.
Roy Atkins of Muscatine a World War II veteran received the Purple Heart with documents confirming valor under fire. He served as a dispatch bearer with the AB unit and was wounded in action.
Nelson G. Kraschel former governor toured Washington D C to discuss national politics. He left a note at the White House for the president after meetings with Senator Merring and Senator Gillette. Kraschel had been in conference with the president on Thursday.
The Chief Black Hawk inaugurated on the Mississippi between Clinton and La Crosse returns for 1959 with tours from Dubuque to Clinton and Dubuque to McGregor to La Crosse and back. Rail lines will bring excursion parties from Chicago for a scenic Upper Mississippi pleasure trip.
David Wade a two year old boy son of Mr and Mrs Warres Wade drowned after falling into a tub of water seven inches deep standing at the Wade home in North English. The father a cream hauler found the body face down in the tub while the mother was away at a neighbor's.
Claire Drain administrator of U S Drain estate files a $46,000 damage action in Iowa City against Oscar C Sorlien Iowa Hardware Mutual Insurance Co and Iowa Hardware Mutual Casualty Assn alleging Sorlien was intoxicated and drove on the left side causing the collision that killed U S Drain, a faculty member of the State University of Iowa, June 5, 1945.
Nine Sioux City men pleaded guilty to stealing and forging WPA checks worth several hundred dollars. Federal Judge George C. Beott sentenced them to three to nine months in jail after they trailed letter carriers and looted mailboxes for WPA checks.
Shenandoah WCTU formally opposes using the term cocktail for fruit and vegetable juices. Mrs. E K Stealy, president, urged members to review the definition of cocktail and consider alternatives.
High School presents a band concert Tuesday at 7 30 p m featuring combined bands of 140 members under conductor Bennett. The program includes Mutual March and Star Spangle Banner with activity marsh noted in listings.
Membership in the Centennial Whisker club reached nearly 200 by noon with Harwood's shoe store Peters' Hardware and the courthouse among full participants. The young men selected for buglers on Memorial day are John Perdock Ralph Shilling and Bob Downing.
The Centennial sunbonnet club committee coordinates August 8 to 10 events and plans bonnet styles for women and girls to wear. For six years the Veterans of Foreign Wars post assists the Ainsworth veterans with the Memorial day program. Commander Jesse Radda appoints Tom Swift to select color bearers and guards and to serve in the firing squad while Fred Longer oversees the ceremony at the cemetery. The Ainsworth program is set for the afternoon of May 30.
Mr and Mrs Nate Young and Dr and Mrs M J Cruise will spend tomorrow in Manchester balancing social visits and local errands in a brief leisure outing.
Ezra A. Nelson proprietor of the Annex hotel known as the Nelson in Cedar Rapids died at 9 40 this morning after a period of bed sickness since January 19. He was born March 7 1890 near Tingley Iowa and lived in Colorado and Missouri before settling in Cedar Rapids. Funeral arrangements are handled by L A Jones and Moon funeral homes with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery pending word from his son in Los Angeles.
Figures by Leslie M. Carl show Washington county tops southeastern Iowa in farm tractors with 1 241 units, up from 1 166, and ranks third in farm automobiles with 2 162. State totals reach 110 831 tractors and 197 556 cars on Town Farms as of Jan 1 1939 with northern and central Iowa maintaining a slight lead.
This obituary notes a hotel proprietor famed for his friendly sales work and courteous service to traveling patrons. Survived by wife, his mother Mrs. B Kunice Nelson of Des Moines, son Howard Everette of Los Angeles, and siblings Hazel Sheely, Harold Smith, Fred Heyer, Daley Carlton, all of Des Moines, Kansas City, Clearfield, or Waterloo. He was a member of the Cedar Rapids Masonic lodge and the Methodist church.
Most poppies sold in Washington today were crafted by Ralph Woods, a World War II veteran, while hospitalized in Des Moines last winter. Legion Auxiliary members announced the fact, and Woods purchased one of the poppies this morning, becoming the first to receive one in Washington.
Motion pictures depicting the sinking of a United States submarine and the rescue effort will be shown at the State theater on Sunday and Monday alongside the regular news reels.
The University of Iowa reports Brighton schools achieved a standout record in May 10 11 statewide tests. Eight students qualified for state finals at Iowa City June 4 6 with two subjects each for Richard Day and David Wentworth.

Food stores open until 10 am then close, drug stores noon to 4 pm, restaurants keep usual hours, poultry houses and barber shops will close. Joe Duea and Kenneth Kimberlin of Washington are named as counsellors for this year’s Boys State at Camp Dodge, sponsored by the Iowa American Legion. Duea served as a leader last year and will be a county counsellor. Kimberlin becomes a city counsellor. The camp splits into city, county and state units. They report June 2 as the state begins the next day. Three Washington boys will join hundreds from across the state.
Harlan realtor Edgar E. Larson reports that former Governor Nelson G. Kraschel has bought three adjoining farms totaling 580 acres in Audubon county. The properties lie within the district containing eighty eight schools in class C with enrollments from 75 to 1256 students.
Des Moines reports show widespread rainfall across Iowa ending drought fears. Keokuk led with 3.60 inches, boosting pastures and crops, while Boone and other towns measured multiple inches. Forecasts expect clearing skies and Memorial Day warmth with rain likely earlier. A local Knoxville pharmacist advertised for rain and saw results with an inch falling.
Copies of The Mennonites to Iowa by Melvin Gingerich of the Washington high school faculty were received in Washington today. The beautifully bound volume is approved by the Iowa state historical society and reflects years of Gingerich research. The work will interest many Washington County residents.
