Iowa House OKs prison funding with new medium facility
Iowa lawmakers approved a conference committee plan to ease prison crowding by funding a new medium security facility. The 78 to 9 vote sent the measure to the Senate, after Governor Ray pressed for the addition. The plan includes 1.2 million for a 160 bed facility to be decided by the governor and Social Services.

Summer YMCA Hours Announced for June to September
Washington YMCA issues summer schedule effective June 1 through September 7. Executive director Don Turner says building hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday through Wednesday and Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Thursday, and 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Programs include Fun Days, day camps, gymnastic lessons, team activities, summer baseball and slow pitch softball. Noon adult swims are noon to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Y will close August 14 to 23 for annual clean-up.

Riverside man fined after trespass conviction
County man Mark Latta of Riverside was fined 50 dollars and ordered to pay court costs after a Magistrate Court jury convicted him of criminal trespass. Judge Avis Wells handed down the sentence to Latta, 22, who damaged a Riverside residence last March. Latta and his attorney Everett Meeker of Washington gave oral notice of intent to appeal to District Court.

Break-in and Theft Reported Near Washington and West Chester
Police were called to investigate the theft of a used car from Thompson Motors. Sheriff’s deputies checked a break-in at the Don Smith home between Washington and West Chester with about $200 missing. The stolen vehicle was a 1967 Rebel taken from the outside lot.

Bicentennial plans set for June 8 meeting in Washington
A general meeting of all people involved with the Washington County Bicentennial observance is scheduled for June 8 at 7 30 p m in the Washington Municipal Building. The bust of George Washington is being cast in Sparta Wisconsin and Don Hanson is completing the base with the time capsule. Entertainment and speakers are ready for the July 4 picnic and final details are being arranged. All committee members are urged to attend the June 8 session which may be the final meeting before the celebration. Paul V Shearer is general chairman. Clubs and churches with bicentennial scrolls for the time capsule should pick them up immediately at the YWCA office on Tuesdays and Fridays.
