Grover Caster a 31 year old Wapello county farmer was swindled when two strangers convinced him his bank was sound then withdrew 1800 and fled with 1300 wrapped in tissue. Police arrested two men at Burlington and a third man and a woman at Monmouth Illinois following plate traces.
Des Moines Iowa draft boards are weighing farm workers requests for occupational deferments. Lieutenant Colonel Robert J Shaw, the state deferment adviser, says Iowa has not heard from national headquarters. He notes 6.7 percent of Iowa registrants hold occupational deferments, far above the under one percent seen in other states, with about three quarters of deferments for agricultural workers.
Dr Earl M Bressman of the US Department of Agriculture will speak at the Pan American day celebration in Hamburg. He is assistant director of foreign agricultural relations in the Latin American division. The Pan American day closes the sixth Hamburg peony festival running Thursday through Sunday with ninety acres of peony fields and 490 varieties in bloom.
The Office of Production Management announced a nationwide drive to collect worn out aluminum pans pots kettles washing machine parts and other household articles for use in war article manufacture. A sample collection campaign will start Friday in Virginia and Wisconsin to test the effort.
Mrs Mary Ann Van Winkle 88 died at 12 30 PM in Washington county hospital after a fall at her granddaughter Mrs Agnes Messenger home. Funeral at 2 PM tomorrow at Presbyterian church Brighton with Rev H C Whiting. burial Hill Crest cemetery. Survived by husband five sons a half sister Maggie McDonald and half brother George Knorr seven grandchildren six great grandchildren.
May 1941 shows Washington county on pace for a new monthly car sales record with 82 new registrations to date, up from 67 in May 1940. Week totals include 23 new cars, boosting 1941 year to date registrations to 5 540 and trucks to 908 versus 792 a year ago. owners listed include Harley Davidson, Norman F Bean, John Ganon, and others with a mix of Plymouth, Chevrolet, Ford, DeSoto, Nash and more.
The coast guard cutter General Green picked up 39 survivors in the North Atlantic after a merchant ship was torpedoed. A search for 60 more is underway. nationality and ship name were not disclosed by the Treasury.
War has boosted the price of scrap to a level that helps clear Iowa dumps. Discarded automobile bodies are being salvaged from the dumps and transported for reuse.
Funeral services are set for Chris Kauffman 57 of Wayland at 2 PM tomorrow at Wayland Methodist Church conducted by Rev BE J Shook. Interment follows at North Hill cemetery with six nephews as pallbearers. He died last evening after a two year illness. Surviving are widow May Essley, foster daughter Dorothy Kauffman, four brothers and three sisters Will John Homer Ed Mrs Katie Johnson Mrs Will Allen and foster son LeRoy who died in an airplane crash twelve years ago.
Roy A. Means sells the Washington Laundry to OC W. Lindquist of Ottumwa. Transfer to occur June 1 with Lindquist and his wife moving to Washington this week. Lindquist has 28 years in Ottumwa Laundry, will take over all equipment at the South Fourth Avenue plant.
Murph N. Adams sues Joseph H. Hostetler in Kalona district court alleging a verbal land sale agreement from March 15 1941 for a 2 percent commission. Plaintiff says he negotiated a sale at 27500 to Andrew M Beachy on May 16 and seeks 550 dollars due, with T Reagan Adams representing the plaintiff.

Last night Washington city council gave first reading to a new ordinance regulating bicycle operation on streets and sidewalks. It calls for bicycle registration lights and horn signals pedestrians right of way on walks and strict obedience to traffic rules. The measure will be reviewed again next Monday night for final passage.
A. G. Arrasmith of Sioux City Iowa reports the death of Frank N Murdoch former examiner in charge of Ainsworth and Cotter banks. Murdoch 46 died of a heart attack in Washington Nebraska at the Argonaut apartments. Survivors include his mother and two sisters.
A middle aged man was found dead in a boxcar on the North Western railway tracks in Fort Dodge. Coroner J K Coddington of Webster county said the man had likely been dead several days. Papers in his clothing bore the name James Keirnain.
President Roosevelt will deliver a fireside chat at 8 30 p m central time extending 45 minutes to present detailed American foreign policy. White House secretary Stephen Early said the address could be historically decisive as isolationists challenge policy and Congress debates peace or war questions.
Washington businesses will close on Memorial Day. State secretary O. E. Schmitt of the Chamber of Commerce announced all food stores will shut all day, poultry houses and barber shops will close, drug stores close noon to four, with restaurants keeping normal holiday hours.
Washington school authorities prepare Case field for junior college and high school graduation ceremonies set for Thursday at 7 30 pm. A platform will be erected on the football field with seating on the ground level. Lights will be adjusted for the event with musical numbers by the high school band and mixed chorus. Dr Willis A Sutton of Atlanta will deliver the main address. Scholarships will be awarded and diplomas presented by the board president Richard A Stewart. Benediction to be offered by Rev C E Strong.
At a special meeting the Washington city council voted to revise the city ordinances by updating, removing obsolete laws, and making changes as needed. City Solicitor Henry L. Bailey will oversee the extended revision, the first since 1908, with many laws then on the books now inoperative.
Police chief George Baker was notified of an attempted burglary at the Don Paul oil station on North Town Avenue. A would be intruder tried to force one lock on Saturday night but did not gain entry.
Funeral services for Mrs Charles Ward will be held at Elm Grove cemetery after the Milwaukee train arrives at five o clock. Dr F W Eastwood will conduct the service at the graveside. Mrs Ward died in Oklahoma City aged about seventy five. She leaves a daughter Mrs Hazel Morean and a sister Mrs Margaret Higgins both of Oklahoma City. Her husband Charles F Ward and another daughter and a sister Ellen Smith are deceased.
A national labor board trial examiner found Republic Steel Corp guilty of unfair labor practices at its South Chicago plant. He recommended reinstatement with back pay for 610 workers from the 1937 Little Steel Strike and back pay for 88 others who cannot be reinstated due to death discharge resignation or other reasons.
A class of about 110 to 115 graduates from Washington county rural schools will receive certificates at a commencement in the Methodist church at 8 p.m. Thursday June 5. The program features a rural chorus directed by Prof. C. A. Fullerton with rehearsal at 7 p.m. Rev Ada Hillis of Kalona will deliver the address.
Five long term inmates labeled dangerous escaped from the Kansas state penitentiary in Lansing today by tunneling up from the coal mine. They fled on the mine officer’s 1937 model coach after reaching the surface. The group Included Lloyd Swain John Eldridge Frank Wetherick George Swift and George Hight all convicted of capital crimes and each imprisoned more than nine years.
The 85 per cent parity bill signed by President Roosevelt reduces eligible Iowa voters for the May 31 wheat referendum to about 6000. Acting Iowa AAA chair Hervey Haven outlined the amendment to the marketing quota provision, noting farmers are affected only if they planted over 15 acres of wheat and their acreage times normal yield equals 200 bushels.
A grave not previously reported for decoration on Memorial Day is listed for James Boice Long sergeant in the army service corps. The burial site is in the northwest section of Elm Grove Cemetery as reported to Miss Besse Conger, chairman of the Women’s Relief Corps committee.
London reports British air and naval forces sank the German battleship Bismarck at 11 a.m. as Churchill announced the end of the ship in the House of Commons. The Bismarck sailed with the cruiser Prince Eugene and went down off the French coast after heavy fighting in the Atlantic.
Announcement announces a time change for the Fjurlington Trailways eastbound bus. The new times set an arrival at 3 40 and departure at 3 45, aligning with the westbound schedule to meet in the afternoon.
U P Representative Hamilton Fish of New York, a Republican critic of the administration, was ordered to active duty today. He holds the rank of colonel in the specialists reserves and will serve on active duty for one month.
Sioux City reports Miss Alice Curran a 60 year old school teacher won first prize but injured her wrist during a slipper kicking contest. She received on site treatment after the fall.
Nyle Bailey of southeast of Washington was sentenced by Judge P. J. Siegers to serve not more than five years in the state prison at Fort Madison after pleading guilty to stealing four hogs from his employer Wilbur Schantz. He had previously admitted stealing hides and was sentenced to up to five years in the Anamosa reform school, but that sentence was suspended and he was paroled.
