Jean Raymond a junior college student from Newton and daughter of Mrs Vera Raymond will receive a free trip to Europe as the winner of a five contestant contest awarding the prize a gift from Fred May tag II.
Mrs Alfred Frisbey of Waterloo, aged 86, broke her left wrist after slipping in her kitchen marking her third bone fracture in three months as she wonders what hoodoo troubles her.
Caroline Van Meter of Moline was crowned queen of Coe College at the campus fete. Attendants included Lavon Buchenan of Norway Blanche Lichtenet rin of Grand Mound Edna Russ of Rake and Katherine Zisco of Cedar Rapids.
A Des Moines collision involving a car carrying nine school boys heading to swim meet critically injured one youth who rode on the engine hood. Sixteen year old Harold Wittenbaugh suffered a broken back after being hurled onto the pavement as two boys rode on the hood.
Ames Iowa firemen attended a school of instruction and witnessed a foggy spray that doused gasoline flames from 25 cans. The California developed technique claims to cut extinguishing time, use less water, and avoid water damage by breaking water into fine droplets that expose a large surface area without wetting the fuel.
Thousands lined the parade route in Mason City for Safety Day as about 4900 pupils and teachers from every city school carried banners with safety slogans. An escort from the state highway patrol and local police led the procession with Governor Kruschels and visiting officials in attendance.
Charles Peter Snohn ston known as Albia's mite baby now rests in a new wooden incubator with plate glass windows. Dr P A Smith designed the unit featuring a removable wooden tray for feeding, internal heat from two bulbs, and an adjustable ventilation cupola. A Breck like feeder with a graduated tube and nipple is used for feeding.

Valencia faced a rebel bombing raid that left at least 21 dead and scores injured. Incendiaries destroyed numerous homes in the city center as six bombers attacked under moonlight, amid ongoing guard clashes and a steel strike picket line.
A fresh shipment of automobile drivers licenses blanks arrived at the sheriff's office after a one day shortage, adding about 2,000 to the 5,000 already distributed in the county. The rush continued as people collected blanks to fill, mail to Des Moines, or pick up at other convenient county locations.
A large crowd gathered at Sunset Park for the junior high May fete postponed four days. Queen Shirley Peterson was crowned after a 2:30 start with a 15 minute band concert. The program featured American musical heritage dances and varied costumes culminating in Maypole recessional.
Tomorrow is Poppy Day with Million red poppies worn to honor World War dead and aid living veterans. Women of the Leon Beatty Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will distribute poppies in Washington and across the United States to collect donations for disabled veterans and bereaved families.
Harry H. Knott of Washington received a patent for a button design. The invention, filed October 9, 1925, features a blank with leveling front and back faces and edge thread slots that incline outward from the front face, assigned to the American Pearl Button Company.
The mercury hit 85 degrees this afternoon marking the warmest day of the year so far in 1937.
In London on May 28 Neville Chamberlain succeeded Stanley Baldwin as British prime minister after Baldwin’s resignation. King George VI granted Baldwin an earldom on retirement and awarded Mrs Baldwin Dame Grand Cross. Chamberlain joined the cabinet as chancellor of the exchequer and awaited his full cabinet list. Baldwin left office amid strong popularity and carried a signed silver framed photograph of the king and queen as a retirement gift.
George Leebl, longtime head of boys' manual training at the junior high, is elected instructor for the same course at Fast Waterloo junior high and will start next fall. He will be succeeded by George Mohr of Estherville, who has been substituting for Leebl during illness and has shown strong teaching performance.
Rev. M. C. Carstensen of the Baptist church will lead funeral rites Sunday at 2 30 PM at L A Jones funeral home for Mrs. James W. Combs who died at her west Washington area home after a ten day illness. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born August 1 1886 in Dutch Creek Township to Frank and Carrie Smith and lived on farms west of Washington. Survived by husband James two daughters Isabelle and Rosalie and son John all at home. Also mother Mrs Frank Smith two brothers Bert and Marion and sister Mrs Walter Sheets. Member of New Haven Baptist Church and Community club.
Mrs. Carl Kelly of 729 North Avenue D reports her daughter Margaret Kelly 16 has been missing since last Tuesday. She left work on East Second Street about eight in the evening and has not been seen. Officers notified with no trace found.
The high school seniors staged the farce A Full House by Fred Jackson to a near full auditorium, with a second performance planned tonight. The plot centers on stolen jewels, a blackmail attempt by Vera Vernon, and the misadventures of Ned Pembroke as friends chase the letters amid a train wreck and mistaken identities.
City Marshal Jay Brown reported a Burlington train narrowly avoided striking a Washington boy on a bicycle at a street crossing. The officer warns that boys on wheels repeatedly take dangerous chances with trains and automobiles and should be admonished to exercise more care.
Notices list several local businesses including W S Reister and Son Gibson Produce Co Towers Produce Co and Randal Produce Co with a schedule indicating opening hours extended to 9 30 Monday morning and closure after that for the rest of the day.
Pete T. Teets of Wellman died after a week long pneumonia illness at about 6 o'clock. Funeral will be Saturday at 2 PM in the Baptist church with Rev EB Hillis officiating and burial in Wellman cemetery. Born June 1 1863 in Star County Henry Til son of William Teets and Margaret Bell he married Cora Lane on September 30 1883. Ten children were born, nine survive, including Roy J in Washington and Mrs Mable DeVreesa.
An urgent appeal from the transportation committee asks for at least thirty cars for the Memorial Day parade to transport Women's Relief Corps members and decorating committees to Woodlawn and Elmwood cemeteries Monday morning. In Youngstown two sections of the Mahoning Valley steel strike sparked clashes between guards and pickets at the Briar Hill plant. A mill yard man suffered a head wound and WPA worker John Baugh was shot in the heel at the Warren plant. Suspect Alvin Morton was jailed after claiming prior beating by pickets.
Twenty thousand petroleum workers walked out in Mexico on May 2 after wage demands. President Cardenas urged negotiators to reach a settlement by midnight. talks failed and the strike began at 12:01 am. Demands included a six peso daily minimum, overtime pay, a 40 hour week, and paid vacations.
President Roosevelt announced the government will pursue action against several tax payers in higher brackets for evident avoidance. He said remedial legislation would be asked of Congress to close loopholes while government lawyers will decide actions in each case and promised steps soon.
Postmaster M. C. DeLong announces the post office will observe Memorial Day with a holiday schedule. No mail delivery and usual closing hours will apply.
Raymond Tucker and George Norman of Washington were bound over for larceny in the night time after arraignment before Justice J. E. Boyee. They allegedly stole soy beans from H. E. Dodson near the county home, selling them in Cedar Rapids after the night of April 5. Officers had arrested Norman and Tucker in Kalona and Ladora. The pair waived preliminary hearing and indicated readiness to plead in district court next week.
