Two thirds of Iowa State College forestry students who graduated March first or will finish in June already have employment. Prof. R B Thomson reports this is the best record in the department's history.
Native of Pella Buerkens of Milford elected superintendent to succeed F. M. Frush who resigned after 81 years. He has served as principal at Owasa and superintendent at Farragut and Milford.
In Sioux City police report R F Burkhart found a thief had taken two bottles of whisky a ham and a slab of bacon from his home after a thief slipped in while he left a ladder by a second front window.
Earl Harper president of Simpson college accepted an invitation to address the Iowa picnic on August 14 in Long Beach California. The annual event draws thousands of former Iowa residents in California and includes a Simpson college graduates reunion.
More than 1.94 children from five counties attended a free clinic in Creston run by the Social Security Administration. Specialists Dr William Haman Dr Arthur Steindjer and Dr Karl Werndorf examined the crippled boys and girls and advised treatment plans to each patient’s family doctor.
Cedar Rapids reports a 14 year old boy Ray Whiting recovering with cuts and bruises after his bicycle was first hit by J Fred Porter’s car and then struck by the following vehicle driven by Paul Lowy. His companion Glen Clime also 14 cried out but too late to avert the accident.
William Beutjell will graduate from Iowa Falls High School despite infantile paralysis that left him in a wheelchair and bed since kindergarten. After years of study he completes his class, achieving his long held goal of graduation.
DES MOINES says Betty Hate 19, a former Drake University co ed, revealed she married former football star Kenneth Kempp, a Le Mara football player who she saved from danger. The wedding occurred January 28, 1926, and was officiated by Rev. Karl Kaupp, the groom’s father, at their Melbourn church.
Mrs Kathryn Rueh 41 Leon joined a sit-down protest at the state capitol steps, then moved to the old federal building to seek re employment. She planned to resume her sit down protest if no job is found.
Food stores will close after 9 30 a m Monday and other shops will shut for the day. Washington area stores advertise their fully stocked shelves offering Decoration Day travel goods and related items this week.
Violence breaks out in the steel strike but the Chamber of Commerce plans a free Wiener Day event on June 3 featuring two free shows at State Theater plus Wiener sandwiches coffee in the park. The High School band performs and a square is roped off for a drill as part of the program.
Funeral services were held at a home southwest of Keota for Matts Frederick who died after a long illness. He had been treated in Excelsior Springs Missouri and at Washington county hospital before returning home. Born March 9 1874 in Clear Creek, he married Mary Spanier October 23 1901. Surviving are wife Mary and siblings Pete Frederick Elmer Pulver and others including Mrs Evelyn Tinnes. Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
The post office department announced new star rate schedules effective June 1 for routes between Iowa City and Washington and Muscatine and Washington. Iowa City departures occur at 4:15 a.m. daily except Sundays, with mail from trains due about 4:39 a.m. and arrivals in Washington around 3:50 to 4:30 p.m. Muscatine departures are at 8:35 a.m. daily except Sundays, with train mail due about 8:40 a.m. and arrivals in Washington in about two and a half hours.
Mrs Lester Isabelle Combs aged 50 wife of James W Combs died at 12 45 PM at her home four miles west of Washington after a ten day illness. Funeral services set for 2 30 PM Sunday at L A Jones funeral home. Born Dutch Creek township August 12 1886 she was a daughter of Frank Smith and Carrie Brewer Smith. Survived by husband mother two daughters one son two brothers and one sister.
Dale Kerr pleaded guilty in district court to forging a farmer’s name on a $125 check from Kalona. Judge J. G. Patterson sentenced him to up to 15 years in the state reformatory for men at Anamosa. Kay Sojka was the victim, and Kerr was arrested in Idaho Falls after cashing the check at Wellman Bank. Sheriff H. M. Putnam returned him. Minor court matter involved H. W. Statler vs Creter Bros. resulting in a judgment for the balance of the note.
On Sunday a star route trip 2 will pick up mail from Iltowa City Oskaloosa and is due about 11 45 a m but no later than 12 30 p m Arrive Muscatine in about two hours after pickup
Two thousand three hundred twenty six Washington county homeowners have filed homestead credit refunds with the county auditor. Only three days remain Friday Saturday and Tuesday with Memorial Day weekend closing the courthouse Sunday and Monday. If not filed by Tuesday afternoon, taxpayers lose the refund.
Iowa State college will honor students for outstanding achievements at the 12th annual honor day convocation. Helen A. Foster of Washington is listed among those receiving highest department honors in home economics education.
An acute corn shortage pushed prices to record levels on the Chicago board of trade. By noon July contracts had risen the full four cents limit to 125 a bushel, the highest since 1925, with September corn following suit in sympathy.
The Wright v Deuker case involves disputes between landlord and tenant. A portion of the case was heard by the court last week with remaining matters set for hearing this week in the ongoing controversy.
Preparations are complete for Washington Memorial Day Monday May 31 led by James I H Baird veteran of the Spanish American War as general chairman. The day will begin with a Municipal band concert in Central Park from 9 14 to 9 45 with school children assembling for the parade. The parade starts at 10 o'clock moving past the reviewing stand and ends at Woodlawn and Elm Grove cemeteries with veterans saluted and brief programs by Robert Oakley and Dr. Arthur Atack. The Washington Concert band directed by Neil Humble and the Municipal band led by Milo Sorden will participate with vocal quartets at Elm Grove and Woodlawn. Route details place the parade from West Washington Street and South Avenue B to Woodlawn and Elm Grove, dividing into two sections for cemetery services.
The name of John Max Kurta, corporal of C Company, 211th Engineers, whose grave is in Section No. 8 southwest in Bint Grove cemetery, was omitted from the Memorial Day graves list furnished to the Journal. Corporal Kurtz, who died within the last year, was a son of Mr and Mrs Frank Kurtz of Washington and one of three brothers who served in the world war.
Mrs. Paul Snakenberg of the American Legion Auxiliary explains the poppy as a means to aid disabled veterans and orphans, with Poppy Day observances planned for May 29. The program funds rehabilitation, child welfare, and jobs for veterans, built from millions of handmade poppies across hospitals and states.
Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes warned that a recent break in at the Wilson WPA quarry south of town could have released 450 pounds of dynamite. He said a stray shot that hit the building might have caused a massive explosion, endangering anyone nearby and causing fatal consequences along the Wayland road.
