Washington firemen battled a car blaze at the Ivan Hahn farm R R 3 after Mrs Hahn started the engine. The blaze melted front tires and the car was a total loss after about 40 minutes on scene.
President Nixon asked Congress to move the Post Office from a cabinet department to a governmentowned but independent ninemember corporation called the U S Postal Service. It would aim to end deficits within five years, with a rate-setting panel subject to congressional veto and a nonpartisan board, reducing political patronage in mailing.
Senator Edward M. Kennedy remains nearly isolated in the Senate as he denounces Vietnam military tactics. He labeled the Hambur ger Hill battle and other offensives senseless and irresponsible, while fellow lawmakers largely fall silent or back Nixon’s eight point peace proposal.
An intercepted note to President Nixon from WEJ discusses postal reform and asks for more zestful zip zealots. The quirky memo hints at reform ideas and perhaps playful instruction for aggressive postal changes.

Iowa Board of Regents heard three state universities request tuition hikes starting next September to cover a 91.4 million appropriation. Iowa would rise to 620 for in state undergrads at UI, 600 at ISU, and 600 at UNI with separate increases for grads and special programs. A proposed gradation based on family ability was tabled amid calls to cut academic pay raises.
The House Ways and Means Committee issued a statement signaling progress on tax reform. The unusual notice notes deliberations ongoing with tentative conclusions on President Nixon’s extension of the income tax surcharge and a plan to address foundations, charitable deductions, real estate depreciation, unrelated corporate mergers, foreign tax credits, and paper farm losses. The panel started hearings February 18 and began drafting legislation after an April 29 meeting.
Three Seattle policemen were wounded by sniper fire during a confrontation between officers and demonstrators in a Negro neighborhood. Across Illinois, sniper attacks and firebombings hit Cairo and Champaign as more than three dozen people were arrested and fire and violence escalated. Otis Young, the black television star, was involved in the melee while youths claimed streets needed revolution. Firebombs targeted the Tri County Health Department porch and a warehouse, pinning firefighters as the health department area was set to be razed for arson reasons.
Nine waves of B52 bombers hit Viet Cong and North Vietnamese targets around Saigon highlands and the coast in overnight raids. U.S. and South Vietnamese forces reported 194 guerrillas killed Monday while bases and towns suffered damage. two helicopters were lost and Marines suffered casualties from a DMZ mortar attack.
