Jerome Lam narrowly escaped injury as a two story ice house section 52 by 80 feet toppled into the street at an Illinois Central railroad yard intersection. Lam had just driven through the intersection when the building crashed. The ice house had not been used recently.
Mayor A M Miller waited two months to preside, then wed two couples within an hour. Maurice A Partridge and Habel Schults of Des Moines wed first, followed by Robert Sloan of Hamilton Missouri and Viola Clark of Kidder Missouri.
Cedar Rapids sheriff James Smith sought help from Otis Indiana to identify a youth believed to be an amnesia victim. The 17 to 20 year old, questioned by a doctor, recalled a fright from a truck and claimed head pain. A billfold contained papers directing inquiries to Otis.
Iowa City officials cancel the academic procession for the June 5 commencement at the State University of Iowa. The change follows last spring’s 52 minute march and the challenge of guiding more than 1,200 graduates from Old Capitol to the fieldhouse.
In Des Moines the statehouse cafeteria reported items disappeared during the 1939 legislative session. Missing were 67 soup spoons 302 water glasses 60 tea spoons 16 forks and 85 dinner knives, totaling 134 dollars according to Berry Halden secretary of the state executive council.

The navy began raising the sunken submarine Squalus to recover 26 seamen believed dead after a flooded compartment. Of 33 survivors, all but three were released from hospital. President Roosevelt praised the recovery effort and Congress discussed extra diving bells for future salvage.
The king and queen arrived in Alberta on a historic Canadian tour and were greeted by a large welcome in Medicine Hat, first stop in the province. Crowds from Medicine Hat and surrounding prairie districts gathered as the royal train then moved toward Calgary.
A request for the Soldier's Medal for Henry Miller of Troop F 118th Cavalry Iowa National Guard follows Capt. O J Brown's recommendation. Miller saved Delmar Yoder a Washington high school student from drowning in the Skunk river near Brighton on May 25 1939.
Washington county drivers may renew licenses for two years by submitting applications at the courthouse. Patrolman John Powers delivered 1,000 blanks to ensure a uniform process, with Mary Westphal handling the typing through July 5.
Four women in a car overturned east of town yesterday afternoon escaping with bruises and cuts. Driver Ralph Leffler had bruises but went to work. Mrs Bereiter, Mrs Lynch, and La Vaugh Leffter were hospitalized with various injuries. Lynch returned home.
Ellis Finke led the senior class day program in the high school auditorium. Faye Schoonover gave the salutatory. Evelyn Nethergall was valedictorian. Bob Masson and Mary Lynn Hellman handled the prophecy. the class will was by Dale Voorhees and Bob Anderson. Macon accepting the class key for the juniors. Edna Mercer honored as Hi Life dedicatee. Eva Nethergall presented the annual. Awards announced by teachers including the Bausch and Lomb Bronze Medal to Fae Schoonover.
World war veterans in Washington are urged to wear a poppy on Poppy Day to honor fallen comrades. Edward Squire, commander of the Leon Beatty Post of the American Legion, says the poppy symbol recalls fields in France and Belgium and vows to remember the dead. He calls on veterans to donate to disabled veterans and families, with the Auxiliary providing the flowers through volunteers.
Washington May 26 The Senate Appropriations Committee trimmed 60 million from the rivers and harbors and flood control bill after economy focused senators pressed for reductions. The panel kept river and harbor and flood control items in the budget estimate, cutting 25 million from rivers and harbors two million from lower Mississippi flood control and 23 million from general flood control.
Judge Frank Bechly wrapped up a short term session then returned to Montezuma after handling miscellaneous court work this week. A decree of divorce was granted yesterday to Marie M. Neteer in her suit against Noyd M. Netser.
About 300 people gathered at Washington High School last night to view a program of motion pictures brought in by Leon Beatty post of the American Legion. They called the show a mighty fine affair though it was free. Prominent on the program.
Radio artists Louisiana Lou and the Burt Brothers quartet visit Washington for a free outdoor concert in Central Park this Saturday at 2:00 PM. The event, arranged with the Washington merchants and Chamber of Commerce, features a public address system and offers a family friendly program of old fashioned ballads and western tunes.
The Women’s Field Army of the American Society for Control of Cancer reports April campaign results in Washington County. Enlistments and donations total $91 with gifts from Crawfordeville, Welt GCOthse, Weltman, and Miss Martha Footer’s support acknowledged by the local lieutenant.

Fritz Kuhn president of the German American Bund and former fuhrer of American Nazis was jailed on a bench warrant charging grand larceny and forgery. A 12 count indictment accuses him of stealing nearly 15000 dollars from the bond. Detectives had trailed him for over a week and he was returned to New York after waiving extradition.
Community patriotic organizations are invited to attend a service at the Baptist church Sunday at 10 45 with a 10 30 gathering at the south entrance. The program includes choir and male quartet selections, honors to the flag, and Rev IL Fredmund will speak on We Are the Peacemakers.
Japanese ambassadors to Germany and Italy threaten resignation over Tokyo refusal to join a three power military alliance. The cabinet had decided to stay neutral and sent the refusal to Berlin and Rome, which countered the policy and warned the ambassadors their usefulness would end. Premier Hiranuma and Foreign Minister Arita pushed to change their stance without success.
