Last evening Roy Dickson Lizzie Lape and Mr and Mrs Robert Morgan of Clay two drove to a river fording. The shallow crossing proved deep the horses and carriage went under with the occupants unable to exit until after a hard struggle they surfaced alive.
Mrs Hall recounts the cyclone’s path near Colfax and Valeria with a heart heavy at the loss of a family’s five children and father. She describes homes wrecked, timber peeled, and townsfolk sheltering in cellars as the storm tore through the countryside.
Yesterday in Franklin township T. W. Frain brought in an old wolf pelt and noted a nearby resident Schneider also captured a wolf in the same magnetic steel trap. Aged Mrs. Sojka of Jackson County died yesterday. funeral and interment are planned for today in Richmond.
Central Station reports a cool cloudy start to the week then warmth in the latter half. Rainfall was light on workdays, with dry soils ready to plow or plant when possible. Ground remains to be planted in areas with heavy rainfall and flat surfaces. Weeds and cutworms threaten early fields. oats and spring wheat risk lodging. Oath filed by senior partner Frank J Cheney of I J Cheney & Co Toledo states the firm will pay one hundred dollars for every case of catarrh not cured by Halls Catarrh Cure. Notary A W Gleason witnessed the sworn statement dated December 6 1886.
A pockmarked resident, after a bar incident in a nearby city, drank in Oskaloosa and lost a sum of money. While calling for help, he failed to pay a twenty five cent toll and reported he had no money. No names are given to protect relatives.
The Misses Flemming of Lexington visit the city while Mrs. L. C. Dawson of Kalona was here yesterday. J.J. Davis of Crawfordsville toured the Court House. Mrs. Renshaw of Winfield visits her sons on the Heights. Glasgow and Lytle install a new awning from Mercer and Chilcote. Miss Charlotte Cunningham returns from Winfield. Joe Huston and family of Crawfordsville spend the day in Washington.
Tomorrow’s ball game drew attention as Mercer and Chilcote plan a free bus and high school window painting in orange and white. Miss Agnes Wertz of Winfield arrived in the city hosting her sister, while Rev Zorbaugh from Cleveland visited the Harvey family with his wife. Farmers warn of armyworm outbreaks threatening pastures near West Chester and FP BE Brown’s fifteen acre field.
Miss Laura Rich hosted a group of young friends at her East Madison Street home last evening. Miss Blanch Gordon entertained at her Heights residence. Howard McCleery in South Washington hosted a gathering of his young friends. Master Alex Lytle marked his birthday with a small party at his East Washington home.
All members of the fire department are requested to meet at the head quarters Thursday evening by order of Fire Chief N. Jones. The notice also lists department details and location in Washington Iowa with a memorial day reminder.
On May 380th the O R J P will run a low rate excursion train to Davenport arriving at Davenport ten oclock a.m. returning leave that point about eight p.m. Attractions at Manhattan Beach include bicycle races steamboat ride on the Mississippi and other amusements. Round trip fare is 1.50 including the steamboat ride. Train leaves Washington at 7 30 a.m. M Goulp Agent.
