Children donate to Kennedy Library memorial

Washington schoolchildren contribute 69.14 to a memorial library planned for Boston on the Charles River. Superintendent John Phleger notes the Kennedy Library, chosen by Jacqueline Kennedy and family, aims to record the president’s life and times and inspire youth with public service ideals. The project cost is set at 10 million dollars.

Pratt Speaks At Bridge Class Commencement

Richard K. Pratt of Washington delivered the commencement address to fifty graduates of the 1964 YMCA Beginners Bridge Class. Valedictorian Carlton Mangold spoke, Beverly Lenz was salutatorian, and diplomas were presented by Dean Robert Reed. A baby marathon fundraising event was announced by Bob Gillesby to run through the summer.

Edens Win YMCA Bridge Marathon with 21440 Points

Mr and Mrs Wendell Eden finish first in the Y s Men s annual bridge marathon with a net 21440 points. Joe Falk ad Leon Hillman place second with 21140 points and Mr and Mrs Herb Campbell third with 20610 as silver bowls are awarded at the year end party. Additional top ten finishers include Bruce Campbell Gibe Mills Roland Taylor Lois Putman Alice Ryan Chic Robison Dean Anderson and Charles Berdo with scores from 14590 to 45290.

Brothers of Brush to appear on Davenport TV program

Washington's Brothers of the Brush will appear on Davenport TV program Wednesday morning through a Davenport invitation. The men will join the show Especially of You on WOO TV channel 6 at 9 30 a m. Harold Jarvis, general chairman, arranged arrangements for the event.

Cub Scout Picnic Thursday at County Fair Grounds

Cub Scouts and parents are invited to a pack picnic hosted by the Washington group Thursday at 6 30 p m at the county fair grounds. Rodney Davison urges attendance as the final meeting before Fall. Families should bring meat for their table two dishes to pass and own table service. Pop and ice cream cones provided. Dress as Indians for an Indian dance around the campfire.

Postmaster Harry Levy states Washington office will observe normal holiday hours on Saturday with no window service and no general delivery. Only special deliveries will be handled. collection and dispatch operate as usual.

Stolen plane crash injures escapee near Grinnell Iowa

Steven Roe Barner, 23, escaped from a Fort Madison prison farm, stole a Cessna 180 from Grinnell regional airport, and crashed during a two and a half hour flight in rainy thunderstorm weather. He survived with a broken leg and arm and head wound, after the plane demolished in a field northeast of Grinnell. Barner admitted the theft and said he was flying northwest when he crashed. He was treated at Grinnell Community Hospital and to be moved to the prison hospital.

Tuberculosis screening to begin in Washington Co

A contact X ray program starts soon in Washington County to identify TB cases. Mrs. John Owen leads the effort with Mrs. Lorraine Suter directing public health screening and coordinating tuberculin tests and chest X rays for those in contact with active TB. The program is approved by local and state health bodies and funded by Christmas Seals.

GOP confirms Morton as permanent chairman for 1964 convention

The Republican National Committee ratified Sen Thruston Morton of Kentucky as permanent chairman and Gov Mark Hatfield of Oregon as temporary chairman at a pre convention meeting in Washington. The session also reviewed 1964 campaign prospects with comments on Goldwater Rockefeller and Scranton. Morton, Senate GOP campaign chairman, previously held the 1960 chair.
