John Zaring and his family were returning from a church event when two men accosted him near the Benz House and Rock Island tracks. Zaring struck one attacker and fought off the pair with a club later joining the takedown. He could not identify the assailants due to darkness.
The forecast for Iowa calls for showers tonight and Thursday with warmer conditions in central and eastern portions tonight and colder air in the extreme west on Thursday.
At last evening’s meeting the University Extension Class voted to delay further study until September and discussed enlarging the library reading room or securing a larger space. Members noted current seating is insufficient and many visitors leave early, urging action for a welcoming reading area for young people.

On the Andy Ferguson farm between Washington and Havre, J. L. Brenner and his daughter faced a near disaster as their plowing team spooked by a passing Narrow Gauge train bolted. Brenner leapt to halt his two-horse team. both crews stopped at the fence with injuries limited to one horse nearly cut to pieces. No one was hurt.
At a Cyrus Chapter meeting nineteen persons received the Royal and Select Master degree. Attendees hailed from Wellman Brighton Ainsworth and locally. Also reported: Hall's Catarrh Cure promoted as a constitutional remedy by Cheney Co Toledo with a $100 testimonial offer. Frank Clawson of Crawfordsville pleaded not guilty to an assault and battery charge. trial set for June 2.
Margaret Myrtle Boice daughter of Dr and Mrs J C Boice died after a sudden quinsy turned blood poisoning at age 15 years 2 months 15 days. She attended High School in the fifth room and was active in the First U P church and Young Peoples Society. Funeral held at Dr Crawford residence with Revs Davidson and Minner. interment Elm Grove Cemetery.
The Washington Cigar Co will begin business on June 1 under Frank Johnson of Galesburg IL. Located on the second floor of the JOURNAL office building, Johnson will offer strictly handmade cigars with only the best goods. Local merchants urged to patronize to boost home industry and employment.
On Tuesday June 1 an excursion to Rock Island runs under Rock Island U P church auspices with a $1 round trip rate. Destinations include the government arsenal Black Hawk watch tower Hennepin canal and new government bridge. Train departs Washington at 7 50 a m and returns Rock Island at 6 30 p m.
Calvin Schurr testifies in Justice Rogers court that Roy Foss struck him from behind without cause. Foss, described as often in court for abusing other youngsters, has prior appearances and once faced a reform school threat from Judge Dewey.

Clerk Young issued the first marriage license of several days to David Tipton and Miss Gertrude Fleming. Tipton is the son of Hon. B. Tipton, and the bride is well known in the city. The wedding takes place today with plans to live on his brother-in-law’s farm. Journal extends congratulations.
