Polar airship Italia, commanded by General Umberto Nobile, reports one motor disabled and turns northward in worsening winds seeking rescue near Mossum Islands. Base ship Citta Di Mirando prepares to press through the storm to aid the crippled dirigible.
Graduate Anna Fleming and Ralph J wards of Washington will receive diplomas at Parsons 49th graduation exercises on June 5. Mr Edwards has played a prominent role in college activities and will graduate cum laude. Justice F F Faville of the Iowa Supreme Court will deliver the Tuesday morning commencement address as honors and awards for the past year are announced.
Lucille and Martha Reister and Mildred Bramer, all juniors, are injured after a collision on South Iowa avenue near the H B Knight home. The Reister Pontiac and a Ford touring car driven by Mrs Joe Dougall were involved. None of the Dougall occupants were hurt. Martha suffered a deep nose gash. Lucille and Mildred have head cuts and facial bruises. The Reister car was driven into a ditch, with extensive front-end damage.
Memorial services will be held Sunday at 2:00 PM in the M E church in West Chester with Rev. P B Gray delivering the sermon. Veterans of Civil War Spanish American and World War are specially invited as well as their families. Afterward graves in West Chester and New Haven cemeteries will be decorated. Piracy on the high seas is discussed as a criminal offense before the United States Supreme Court.
Kansas City May 25 The Methodist Episcopal conference remained in deadlock over electing a third bishop due to a two thirds majority rule. A motion to reduce the bishop areas and avoid a third bishop was defeated 474 to 353 on the sixteenth ballot. Louis O. Hartman led with 391 votes. Ralph Cushman withdrew from the race after 16 ballots. Lucius H. Bugbee withdrew after the 14th ballot. Other candidates totals: Army 60, Gray 42, Kirk 12.
The Washington Y W C A invites Ottumwa Y W C A girls to share their Des Moines River camp at Gardner's Bend August 7 to 14. Camp director is Miss Arganbright with a nurse and advisors. Open to girls 12 and up with $1.50 registration and 75 cents daily for board and lodging, including transport. Further information from Mrs Mant on Hebner.
Rehearsals at the High School every night this week prepare the musical comedy 1. M. S. Pinafore for its Tuesday May 29 appearance in the school auditorium. Cast includes Everette Griffith as the lead and Winifred Allen as Josephine with Gladys Williams as Buttercup and Roy Finch as captain.
Cold storage records indicate smaller holdings of apples poultry eggs and cheese on February 1 this year compared with earlier. Butter meat and lard totals rose, signaling varied inventory movements across commodities.

MITCHEL FIELD May 25 Lieut. Stanley M. Umstead United States army pilot leaped to safety with a parachute when his plane caught fire at 2500 feet. His parachute strap snagged on the seat delaying the jump but he escaped with burns to hands and face and a singed mustache. The plane exploded as the fuel tank blew out.

J H Strief chairman of the Iowa board of control reports South Dakota's habitual criminal law reduced prison numbers after a Sioux Falls visit. He says law doubles sentences on each conviction until the fourth, then life, keeping offenders away long term. Strief also notes excellent crop conditions in the Dakotas.
In Innsbruck May 25 a student riot led to twenty two arrests and injuries as police used batons to quell protests after students tore down the Italian consulate flag commemorating Italy's entry into World War I. The consul protested and soldiers raised the flag amid further demonstrations.
Frank Miles editor of the Iowa Legionnaire is removed from hospital to his home in Des Moines to recuperate after a serious bout with influenza and pneumonia.
Ottumwa Iowa May 25 The trial of J Everett Lewis 31 who killed John F Webber a local bank er will not finish before the end of next week Defense lawyers expect to close their case today The state has announced 56 witnesses for rebuttal and arguments are expected to take two or three days.
Dr W W Bowers invites Bethlehem commandery Knights Templar to join Methodist church services next Sunday evening at 7 30. Commander W Bell asks all members to attend in full uniform and bring a large turnout to honor Dr Bowers. The service replaces the usual Easter assembly with a 7 30 start at the Mason temple where members should meet 30 minutes early.
State Auditor J. W. Long was in the city today urging voters to support his bid for a second term. He notes public focus on top ticket officers while promising maximum efficiency at minimum expense and offers to provide detailed primary road fund and highway commission expenditures on request.
It is announced wreaths for Memorial Day will be made at the court house next Tuesday afternoon with patriotic women of the community invited to participate. Over 300 wreaths are to be produced. Members of the Women’s Relief Corps will cut arbor vitae tomorrow afternoon for the wreaths and meet at the court house at 1 30.
Second assistant Postmaster General Glover told Iowa City postmaster C. C. Schroeder by telegram that Iowa City will remain an airmail port. He said other arrangements are being made to handle Cedar Rapids requests for an airmail port, but did not specify the arrangements.
Grinnell Iowa May 25 Harry W Knapp longtime managing editor of the Grinnell Register died today after a illness of several months He served on the paper for 12 years leaving behind a widow and a four year old daughter in Grinnell Iowa
Mayor Henry F. Krueger issues proclamation ordering a dog quarantine in Keokuk to curb rabies amid several fatal canine cases. The measure spans 60 to 900 days and aims to prevent a citywide outbreak.
The 110 foot rum running ship Tonawanda was captured in Raritan Bay near Old Orchard Light with over 1500 cases of liquor after four direct hits by a coast guard gunner. Eight prisoners were taken in the coast guard operation off Staten Island.
Ames Iowa May 23 County agents from 80 counties attend the annual short course at Iowa State College. They study poultry plant pathology botany animal husbandry crops soils and pest control with lectures by specialists. The course runs through Friday evening.
Coach Hod Rice of Washington high school took eight boys to the Ames track meet with events including rain affected sprints and field events. The mile relay lineup features McAvoy Layton Crone and Quinn with Layton substituting for Bales who will receive his diploma. Preliminaries start at ten with finals at two. over 600 athletes from 138 schools compete.
Washington county conservation league gathered after graduation exercises in Kalona with eight new members joining. Discussions covered county conservation needs, pheasant conditions in the north, and reports from Kalona and Wellman localities. A Wellman meeting and a Kalona fish fry are planned soon.
Mrs W R Jeffrey learned of the death of her sister Mrs Ella Wright Burnside aged 86 of Monmouth Illinois born in Ireland. The Burnside family long lived in Dutch Creek and will be remembered by older residents. She fell May 1 while wintering in Philadelphia breaking her hip and the funeral will be in Monmouth with interment in Garner Iowa.
