Washington County investigators probe a break in at the Amvets Club in Richland Saturday night. Manager reports 15 cases of beer, two fifths of liquor and $5 in change stolen.
The First Presbyterian Church and the Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church opened their cornerstone boxes at a Sunday congregational dinner after worship. Richard and Mrs. McCall and Leo Beauchamp opened the boxes containing papers from 1890 to 1918. Readings and church rolls were examined by Rev. Dr. Kettlitz and Rev. Giuntoli as seniors were honored at the service and dinner.
Rep. John Culver proposes a joint House Senate study to rewrite the federal income tax form in plain English with a target date of next April 15. He argues current complexity adds a surtax by boosting need for accountants and preparers, noting over half of 77 million returns were prepared by others and retirees face higher taxes due to misreadings.
The Supreme Court agreed to decide if states may require attendance to age 16 despite religious beliefs. The case challenges Wisconsin’s ruling that forcing Amish children into high school beyond eight grade violates religious freedom.
Muscatine Iowa selected as site for a three year national pilot to spark under 30 interest in state and local government. The League of Women Voters cites funding of 55000 from Carnegie Corp and a 500000 total grant to the Education Fund to create standing committees and citizen education programs across Iowa.

Turkish authorities arrest Omer Erine and two girls Kadrive Nizozgen and Julide Zaim in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Ephraim Elrom. Elrom, 59, was found shot to death in Istanbul during a 15 hour curfew after a weeklong kidnaping by gunmen claiming ties to a leftist group. The case prompted calls for punishment of the perpetrators and safety measures around the Turkish capital.
Tornadoes from spring storms lashed Texas Iowa Nebraska and Kansas killing James Carroll age 47 in Whitney Texas and injuring 30 to 35 others. Dozens of buildings were leveled and damage spread from Whitney to New Market Iowa and Fremont and Colon Nebraska.
Southeast skies clear gradually with a drop in temperatures tonight yielding upper 40s lows. Tuesday remains partly cloudy and cooler with highs around the upper 60s.
National Guard troops moved into Chattanooga with live ammunition to aid police during three nights of looting and arson sparked by a canceled musical appearance. Gov. Dunn ordered 1,500 to 2,000 troops into the city, split into 20 man teams, to restore order as mayor Walker requested assistance.
Former Sen Eugene McCarthy spoke to 27 000 at a Minneapolis rally urging a new party if peace cannot be achieved within one of the two major parties. He criticized Nixon Vietnam policy and urged immediate negotiations and accountability for the war.
The jury considering Black Panthers Bobby G. Seale and Ericka Huggins on murder conspiracy charges reported it could not reach a verdict on all charges. Judge Mulvey sought clarification as the panel of seven white and five black jurors was asked to specify if any charges had a unanimous verdict or none.
