The retiring Stewart school principal in Washington will be honored at an all invited open house this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the school’s north Washington site. Pupils, former pupils and friends will pay respects to the honoree ending a long teaching career this spring.
A column of American tanks crushed a North Vietnamese attack on a South Vietnamese outpost 55 miles from Saigon. The clash began with a 100 round mortar barrage before dawn Friday, killing 53 guerrillas. Saigon said government defenders suffered light losses as reinforcements, artillery, helicopters, and warplanes were deployed.
Sporadic sniper fire continued at North Carolina A and T University with one death and eight wounded over two days. National Guardsmen enforced curfews in Greensboro as police and guards fought snipers around Berkeley campus. Authorities reported no new injuries or arrests Friday night, but one officer remained critical from earlier gunfire.
SPACE CENTER Houston reports Apollo 10 completed 6 days in space and 31 lunar orbits. Crew Stafford Cernan Young steered Snoopy to 9.5 miles of the Moon, docking with the main craft and testing all but touchdown. Return burn described as beautiful as the crew eyes Earth.
An intercepted message celebrates Apollo 10 in space and offers congratulations on a successful mission. The note signs off with WEJ and mentions a landing day described as happy landings dated Monday.
In last minute action the Iowa Legislature passed a bill to allow construction of low rent housing for elderly and physically handicapped. The measure, backed by Davenport legislators and Rep. John Tapscott, passed the House 87-17 and Senate 32-10. The plan lets city councils initiate projects without voter referendum, with a conference committee report replacing earlier limits. It also removes referendum requirements for rent supplements and directs that 10 percent of rents go to the county treasurer in lieu of taxes.
Notice of probate of the will and appointment of executor for the estates of Ed Knotek and Clara Pimme. Court records indicate the will is to be probated and an executor will be appointed to administer the estates. Proceedings will determine no claims against the estates except as allowed by law.
The 1969 Iowa Legislature adjourned Friday after more than four months of tax and spending debates. Lt Gov Jepsen closed the Senate at 7:05 p.m. and House Speaker Harbor ended the session at 7 p.m. Major actions included bond financing for university classrooms, targeted state aid for private colleges, and a $7.4 million annual increase in truck licensing fees. The body reduced total membership to 150 in 1971 and moved toward higher local taxes due to funding gaps, while conservatives praised increased education and municipal spending without broad tax hikes. Weather outlook: partly cloudy with warmer temps upcoming.
Congressman Fred Schwengel will travel to Iowa for Memorial Day weekend. On May 29 at 2 00 p.m. he will present a flag flown over the U S Capitol to Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and its employees in Davenport. On May 30 he will attend Memorial Day services in Kalona and present another Capitol flag, with ceremonies starting at 9 30 a.m.

At Mildenhall England Sgt Paul Adams Meyer a Vietnam veteran seized a 60 ton C130 and flew toward the United States. Search planes scoured the Channel but failed to locate the aircraft or pilot by Friday morning. Meyer phoned his wife from Cherbourg saying he had trouble with the automatic pilot and asked for privacy. He had a month left before his unit returned to Langley Virginia where his family waited.
One-car crash near McGregor Iowa killed a man and injured another both residents of Monona. The impact ruptured a pipeline and spilled about 6000 gallons of gasoline along U S 18 and nearby railroad tracks. Police said the car went over a 20 foot embankment striking a gasoline storage line at the Iowa Oil Co. bulk plant. Traffic and trains were halted as authorities worked the scene.
Willie Muldrew a standout Iowa State football lineman died after being shot in an apartment at the married student housing on the campus. Beth Aronoff 20, daughter of former professor Samuel Aronoff, is charged with murder and a preliminary hearing is set for June 2 while Richard Lundvall faces a concealed weapon charge. Aronoff and Lundvall had connections to a party at the apartment.
