In Brockton Massachusetts the Brink's armored car theft loot was revised upward to 563000 with two of the three masked hijackers identified by a teen and a liquor store clerk. Edward O'Keefe of First County National Bank said 330000 came from Raynam Park dog track and 9000 were in checks.
Sen Edward Long of Missouri said he will ask IRS Commissioner Sheldon Cohen under oath whether IRS leaked tax return information to Life Magazine. He cited $48000 paid to Morris Shekner for Hoffa defense work and denied any link to Hoffa or other government cases. Long called the Life piece a smear and defended his hearings.
At United Nations New York persistent opposition delayed an extraordinary Security Council meeting on the Arab Israeli crisis. US Ambassador Goldberg was late entering the chamber and after his arrival African Asian and Latin American delegates caucused and left delaying proceedings. Several delegations opposed debating until Thant returns Friday from Cairo. The Soviet delegation stayed in the chamber.
Iowa House amended a bill to require legislative approval for University of Iowa hospital and medical clinic revenue bonds, citing constitutional and bond market concerns. Senate adjourned without final action as advocates pressed modernization needs for University Hospitals including a 15 year $36 million outlook.
The United States warned Egypt it would use force to break any blockade of international shipping through the Gulf of Aqaba linking Israel to the Red Sea. France and Britain urged talks to avert war as Nasser refused to back down, with U A R officials and U N efforts intensifying amid rising tensions and protests in Cairo.
Major Richard Hardwood Pearce a decorated Vietnam veteran with access to top secrets defected to Cuba with his four year old son. They flew from Key West in a Cessna 150 and landed at Liberty City Airport. Havana Radio reported asylum granted. Pearce said he seeks asylum or passage to another country. The case marks the highest U.S. officer to defect during the Cold War.
Chaos returned to Vietnam as the Buddha birthday truce collapsed. U.S. air power struck targets near Hanoi and in the Central Highlands, including the Thai Nguyen railroad yard 37 miles north of Hanoi. Allied casualties rose with 18 killed and 125 wounded in South Vietnam. US B52s launched near Saigon. North Vietnamese mortars hit an Army unit. civilians died in a village near a Special Forces camp as fighting resumed. The 25th Infantry reported 70 enemy killed with light own losses.
Delegation of Iowa legislators and businessmen from northern counties will testify in Des Moines before the Iowa Reciprocity Board. They protest a ruling banning Minnesota farm truck plates on 12 000 pound plus trucks, saying it disrupts cross state commerce as Minnesota plates stay legal in Minnesota while Minnesota farmers lose Iowa trade.
A public hearing is scheduled in Washington on proposed street improvements. Local officials invite residents and property owners to attend and review the plans, with details available on page 6 of today’s notices.

Iowa House and Senate approved a two week extension to June 15 for adopting a legislative subdistricting plan. If no plan by then the Iowa Supreme Court would draw districts to 80 seats in 18 districts. The move addresses drafting difficulties and allows time for attorneys to review boundaries before action. Memorial Day weekend further limits sessions.
Washington homicide detectives probe the brutal slaying of Judy Robeson, 25, an aide to Senator Frank Carlson. Her nude body was found at Capital Park Apartments after a violent struggle. Autopsy cites multiple blows and possible sexual assault. no suspects and case remains open.
The proposal outlines a four lane highway beginning near Mount Pleasant and extending through Henry and Washington Counties into Johnson County near a point southwest of Iowa City. A June 15 hearing will review the route for the prepanes freeway standard project.
