Two British diplomats in Communist China were coated with glue and kicked by Red Guards, a move London called outrageous. Britain imposed emergency laws banning inflammatory broadcasts as Hong Kong calm returned after two weeks of rioting and strikes.
Public Defender Gerald W. Getty sought an epileptic-furor test for Richard Speck, asking Judge Paschen to delay Friday’s death sentence by 30 days for four doctors to evaluate him. Speck, convicted in Peoria on eight counts of murder for the nurse killings, faces a death or prison term after mitigation and aggravation hearings.
Probate of wills and appointment of executors announced for estates of Donald J. Fosdick and J. E. Letts. Notice to bidders issued for Washington County road work.
The Chicagua Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and the Iowa Conservation Service held Fish Day at Lake Darling. About 51 physically and mentally handicapped children attended with a sponsor each. 4000 bullheads were released for the event and many children fished for prizes for most fish and biggest catch. A fish fry and activities followed at the club house, with several children fishing for the first time.
In Des Moines the Iowa House defeated a resolution to halt the 62nd General Assembly at 5 p m June 2 and keep lawmakers working without pay. The measure, led by Rep. R W Welden and 18 Republicans, drew 29 yes to 80 no amid a split party vote.
Fairfield Iowa UPI faculty at Parsons College voted 101 to 58 to urge the Board of Trustees to fire President Millard G Roberts and other senior staff for actions leading to the current crisis. The NCA revoked accreditation April 6 and critics called the college a diploma mill.
Partly cloudy tonight and Friday with a chance of scattered showers or thunderstorms mainly in the northern area. Cooler by Friday in the west and north. Lows range from around 60 north to 65-70 south. Highs Friday reach in the 80s northwest to mid 90s southeast.
Washington High School held its 1967 commencement with a capacity crowd in the gym. Speakers included Vivian Petratz Michael Hansen Jane Kleese and Douglas English. Scholarships totaling several hundred dollars were awarded to 16 graduates, with donors including Kiwanis Club Rotary Club and various associations.
American war losses in Vietnam rose to a weekly record of 2,650 casualties with 337 killed in action and 2,282 wounded, plus 31 missing, in the week ending May 11. Communist deaths reached 2,464 as South Vietnamese losses numbered 241, with an Allied to Communist fatality ratio of 3.9 to 1. The toll covers fighting in War Zone C north of Saigon and a major DMZ battle.
William Howe former Des Moines County Auditor pleaded guilty to embezzling about 8787 dollars in public funds. He will be sentenced June 8 after being released on 7500 dollar bond. Howe 43 a Democrat resigned April 29 and was replaced by Myranell Dockendorf. The shortage was found by state auditors.
United Press International reports a first reported clash near the Gaza Strip between Israeli patrols and Palestine Liberation Army troops, with no casualties. Cairo officials call the incident provocative as UN forces depart. Thant cuts peace mission and departs Cairo for New York.
