Iowa farmers face a delayed corn planting season as May ends with only 55 percent sown in the east and most of western fields done. Poor germination from rains and pest pressures may force replanting or abandonment, while a West Iowa storm system caused at least one death and property damage in Sioux City and near Haverhill.
W R Brown of Washington received a letter from J W Glasgow Santa Fe Lines Los Angeles announcing the death of W B Glasgow a native of this community who passed away May 21 in Whittier California He would have been 101 June 11 born near Washington and a longtime resident of the area He was from a pioneer family and an uncle of Miss Althea Montgomery and Mrs W Masson of Washington.
J M Kelly of Washington was re-elected state warden at the Iowa Knights of Columbus convention in Fort Madison. G A Figge Ossian was re-elected state deputy with Ray F Conley Des Moines as secretary, A J Hesse Barling treasurer, and J W Neary Marshalltown state advocate. The next convention will be in Cedar Rapids. supreme convention slated for August in Chicago. Delegates including George Wheelan and Joe Pacha returned from the meeting. Father J H O'Donnell of Washington attended a session. About 590 people attended.
Boston AP reports George B. Litchfield, 71, retires after a 50 year career with the Boston and Albany Railroad, noting a flawless on time record and a lifetime in rail service.
Seven teams are entered as plans for the City Kittenball League in Washington Iowa proceed. Games begin next week at Junkin and Troop F fields with Monday and Tuesday fixtures and daylight and floodlight starts. Officials, umpires, and team rosters are listed, outlining field rules and squad sizes for the season.
The Washington Concert Band offers its services free of charge for an Memorial Day evening concert weather permitting. Hal Reister, manager for the band, stated the offer on behalf of the musicians and it was gratefully accepted by the committee.
In New York Will Rogers mocks the Roosevelt administration’s spending and tax plans. He suggests lawmakers will face a difficult test to extract funds without harming taxpayers, implying the plan may be unpopular with voters.
Lee Holland was elected president and George Freshwaters vice president of the Y's Men's club at the annual election. J A Taylor became secretary and Roger Sherman treasurer. New officers will be installed next week with a Memorial Day program planned during ladies night. Lee Moore, a harmonica player, was introduced and performed for the group. Bob Arthur of Wilson Concrete Co. spoke on cement history and concrete pipe and outlined his company’s scope.
An old fashioned runaway sparked an urban stir on East Main street this morning. A wagon attached to a team rolled from an alley on the east side of the square, sped through Main street causing noise but no injuries or major damage as bystanders yielded and the wagon halted several blocks away.
President Roosevelt stated that emergency federal taxes would be eliminated if the eighteenth amendment is repealed. He argues repeal would abolish taxes and support public works, with Postmaster General Farley urging party leaders to back repeal and accelerate action by year end 1933. New York’s repeal win boosts momentum toward the 36 states needed.
A fire at Clarence Humphry farm northwest of Wellman destroyed a barn, double corn crib, and machine shed. Hay, harness, two cows, and four calves were lost. one calf escaped. About 1400 bushels of shelled and ear corn were burned. insurance may not cover the loss. Firemen from North Enellen could not stop the blaze discovered by Mrs. Humpty around 10 p.m.
High school style show features generations of costumes from 1880 to early 1900s plus modern student creations. Esther Smith and Mary Zeck portray a schoolgirl and grandmother in a play amid a juried parade of dresses, prints, and lawn outfits costing a few dollars.
Dr A W Clow of Washington was chosen as president and Dr Laura Miller of Adel as vice president at the Iowa Society of Osteopathic Physicians annual convention in Des Moines on May 24.
The Senate stock market investigation continues with J o Morgan testifying for a second day as the committee reveals a list of over 60 bankers linked to the Morgan bank. Morgan says many loans to bankers are overdue and under collateralized. The Dawes loan was repaid April 20, 1922. the Davis loan remains unpaid.
Supt Perry Jordan of the water and light plant works on wiring to illuminate the four faces of the town clock in the courthouse tower. He can switch the lights from the ground and has recently lighted the east face as a temporary measure. Completion is expected in about a week with a nominal outlay.
Washington wrapped up spring basketball practice with 15 to 20 youths training under Coach Guy Carlton. Fifteen attended the final session with a scrimmage pitting Mangold and McFadden at forwards against Mallory and Wavelay, while Cantoni, Hamp sher, and Norton contributed as guards and center. Returning lettermen Cantoni Kupka and Jones lead a group that includes new prospects aiming for next season.
