On Tuesday June 1 an excursion to Rock Island is planned under the Rock Island U P church with a round trip fare of $1.00. The trip features Tri Cities sights including the arsenal Black Hawk watch tower Hennepin canal and government bridge. Train departs Washington at 7 30 am and returns from Rock Island at 6 30 pm.
Jackson Roberts, a longtime Washington County lawyer and public figure, died suddenly after months of heart dropsy. Born May 9, 1836 in Vermont, he lived in Boston and Washington, married Margaret Gibson, and left a wife and three children. He served as associate judge in Nevada County and was a Knight Templar prelate in Bethlehem Commandery No. 45. Funeral set for four o'clock tomorrow at the family residence, Rev Ti R Stark to officiate. Interment Elm Grove cemetery.
After a year and four months of tuberculosis the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. P. Howland, Addie, died at home on the Heights. At twelve she joined the Baptist church and served in church and Young People’s Society. Survived by brothers P. L. Howland and Frank G. Howland. sister Mary Corena is deceased. Funeral today at 3 PM from the family residence conducted by Rev. Robt. Gray. Remains to be moved to her childhood home.
The text notes the burial this evening at 5 o'clock in Juniata Nebraska beside the sister. Mr and Mrs Howland and their son accompanied the remains to the grave site and the other son P L traveled with them to Burlington before returning home to Ashburn Missouri.
If we do our part the encampment will occur this year. The city must provide suitable grounds and cover actual expenses for lighting and water. The regiment has grown from eight to twelve companies in thirteen years. Generals Wright and Jackson may visit Saturday to decide, with Wagner's track and Smouse's land proposed as camping grounds.
Last night’s temperance gathering at U P church drew a deeply interested crowd. Boyd Woods presided with Miss Lowash as secretary, Rev. Hughes led opening prayers, and E Brockway outlined Anti-Saloon League aims. An Auxiliary league formed with Auten as president and Jayne as secretary, Leet as treasurer, with Leet and Lysle Baker as vice presidents plus a Baptist representative.
An indictment names J R Ratekin commandant and several officers including J W Morton treasurer and B I Warfel as charged. They allegedly retained Henry Bisom’s pension certificate and misused funds from the Soldiers Home at Marshalltown. The case goes before Judge Woolson in the current Supreme Court term.
Judge Dewey convened a brief session in Oskaloosa. An order allowed J Bybee to pay a $250 fee for S W Neal guardian of a minor to take a case to the Supreme Court. Brookhart sought an order for Albert McKinstry to be jailed, but the judge postponed until Saturday. Ed Walther rode the Narrow Gauge to Winfield this noon.
Fair tonight with light frost in the central and eastern parts and warmer in the northwest. Tuesday will be fair and warmer. Grand jury at Des Moines honors Assistant United States Attorney Henry M Hicher for his guidance. West Chester horse Billie escapes but returns home unharmed after a long, eventful trek.
Rev Chas Brown, back Sunday from an extended trip, will speak to Epworth Leaguers and friends at the MI church this evening. He will describe his travels and the event is open to all. The notice also promotes Hallet & Davis pianos sold at reduced prices by Wallet & Davis Co with Williams as general agent.

J Hite ships twenty horses to Buffalo with Charles Reeves to Chicago. University of Chicago athletes prepare for a major pilgrimage to Ann Arbor next Friday. about forty players across baseball, track and tennis to travel. Chicago Record notes Chas Burroughs of the city leads in short sprints with a 10.15 seconds 100 yards and a 22.45 seconds 220 yards, while RB Hyman also excels close behind.
