Des Moines reporters describe a lightning strike at the Clarinda high school causing bricks to fly from windows and skylights while two teachers are safe. Workmen repair the damage and brace the chimney fearing collapse in the two story brick building amid soaked fields.
Nebraska takes Carter Lake soil and water into Pottawattamie county Iowa and declares the area forever Iowa after bills passed late and a delayed Iowa session. Governors Griswold and Wilson exchange copies confirming the change.
A Des Moines jury returned a damage verdict after three days of deliberation in federal court before Judge Charles A. Dewey. Crosley Radio Corp of Cincinnati was awarded $1,000 against defendants John Hieb of Des Moines Herbert Hieb of Cedar Rapids and Hieb Distributing Co in a suit on a $2,600 note.
Federal Judge Charles Dewey placed 82 year old George Franz Bauer of Iowa City on two years probation after he pled guilty to obtaining 400 dollars from his employer bank through unsecured checks and false book entries. Bauer sought second citizenship papers after six years in the national guard, believing service granted citizenship.
Washington officials said the administration raised its war production goals to 86 000 planes and 16 000 tanks, a 60 percent rise from last year. The uptrend reflects greater lend lease demand and U S defense needs, with about 20 000 planes slated for this year for the United States and Britain.
IOWA CITY May 23 UP Six persons were fined today on gambling and liquor charges. They were among 17 named in 14 indictments containing 26 counts. Jack Kennedy James Gwynne Charles Smith and Harold Stingley all of Iowa City were fined 300 each for maintaining a nuisance. Kennedy Gwynne and Smith were fined 100 each for possessing gambling devices. Ron Kessler of Solon received 100 for possessing a gambling device and 3800 for illegal possession of liquor. Waldo Geiger was fined 25 for possessing gambling devices.
Shirley Peterson leads as Peg in a seniors produced comedy Peg-o-My-Heart at the high school auditorium. The ensemble, including Alaric Chichester and John Rothlisberger, delivers strong scenes with stage effects and live music from the school orchestra under Maurice Brayton.
The first directory of state manufacturers since 1928, compiled by labor commissioner Charles Harness, shows 5,886 industrial concerns in Iowa up from 4,578 in 1928. It notes 240 cities host plants, 14,000 miles of rail, 6,000 miles of paved roads, and that one fifth of the population is supported by manufacturing.
Governor George A. Wilson reports increased Iowa consideration for industrial use due to its strategic location and resources. He met with top war officials including Under Secretary Patterson and OPM leaders, praising Iowa’s defense help and congressional support while noting no steel shortage and planning a statewide bus and truck inventory for the war department.
Rescue workers brought to the surface 13 miners killed by a mine explosion at the Panhandle mine 2½ miles south of Bricknell Indiana. Seventeen others were endangered but returned to the shaft as the blast occurred 325 feet underground, about 2500 feet from the shaft.
Mrs. Harry W. Jordan and two daughters of Winfield were business callers here yesterday, stopping at a local firm and meeting with staff during their visit.

Mrs. Carl Voorhees announces the poppy sale groups for Washington with shifts from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. including many named members and Junior Auxiliary volunteers. Two thousand eight hundred fifty poppies are available to be sold to raise funds.
Berlin May 23 Lt Commander Guenther Prien, one of Germanys best known U boat leaders, failed to return from a submarine mission and is presumed lost. Prien rose to fame early in the war for penetrating Scapa Flow and torpedoing the Royal Oak. He is the third top German U boat ace officially listed as lost.
Funds for disabled veterans and other Legion Auxiliary relief work will be increased in proportion to gifts for the poppy sale this Saturday. No fixed price. buyers choose any amount. Last year 2 082 poppies sold in Washington averaged nine and a fifth cents, though wearers aim to honor World War I soldiers and aid veterans.
In Des Moines the sale of poppies supports disabled veterans and rehabilitation work. All items offered were crafted by veterans at the veterans hospital, inviting public participation to honor soldiers and aid recovery efforts.
Washington received .92 of an inch of rainfall yesterday and last night per the official weather observer. The precipitation came in intervals during the day and evening and was followed by cooler conditions tonight and today.
Des Moines report notes soaking rains over 48 hours reduced drought danger in Iowa. Weather bureau says rain was followed by cool, favorable temperatures easing fire risk and improving soil moisture conditions statewide.

An Iona state liquor control commission truck was in a crash three miles east of town on highway 92. Driver William RR Hook of Des Moines escaped with minor injuries after the jackknife collision with a Missouri registered car. Hook injured a shoulder, other injuries noted, truck to Washington for repairs.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jake Rudolph, who died Thursday at Washington hospital, will be held Saturday at two o'clock at the Friends Church in Rubio. Rev. Carl Klein will officiate. Burial will be at Valley.
Heavy rain drenched several communities with over an inch in many places yesterday. Indianola reported 1.90 inches the highest total, while Clarinda faced a thunderstorm with lightning striking a high school chimney as students had mostly departed, limiting damage.

Melvin C. Hillery named chairman and Leigh Soule secretary to organize a church softball league for this summer. Last year five teams played in a similar league. Churches interested in entering teams are urged by Soule to act quickly as games are hoped to begin soon.
