Iowa officers will convene a series of wartime law enforcement meetings next week in Des Moines led by the federal Bureau of Investigation and J. J. Dalton. A moving picture titled War and Order, shot in London, will illustrate agencies at work under wartime conditions.
Captain Walter W. Wendt of Council Bluffs has been promoted to major in the U S Army, potentially the youngest in service. He is stationed at Camp Claiborne Louisiana and serves on General Walsh’s staff after joining the army general staff corps. A 13 year Iowa National Guard veteran, Wendt enlisted at 14 and rose from private to captain by 1937, later attending Fort Leavenworth staff school in 1940.
ALBIA W V Henry, 37, was sentenced to twenty years for his role in the 1934 torture robbery of Mrs Martha DeTar of HKddy Ville after pleading guilty to burglary. He was moved for trial by jury on aggravated robbery but received the lesser charge as District Judge H C Taylor imposed the sentence. An auto crash occurred 12 miles east of Centerville on Highway 3 during transfer to Fort Madison penitentiary. The collision involved Sheriff John W Goodwin of Monroe County driving a car and a Fisher Lumber Co truck from Centerville.
About 1,500 Iowa coal miners earned estimated unemployment benefits between 25 000 and 80 000 in April as the state Employment Security Commission noted. Benefits were not drawn due to mine operations continuing during the contract gap. Another 2,500 miners who applied were denied compensation for lack of eligibility.
Jesse Flack of Ottumwa, 19, pleaded innocent to a manslaughter count filed by Da is County Attorney Paul Proctor. Flack, whose 10 year sentence for breaking and entering was revoked, will be taken to Anamosa reformatory. Proctor said Flack will be prosecuted on the manslaughter charge and returned from prison or trial. The charge stems from a Sunday car crash in which Mrs. Glen Speer was killed and another person injured.
The Shenandoah annual flower show will advance a week to May 31 and June 1. Nurseries indicate blooms will fade by the first week of June, reducing massed displays if the event were canceled. The Community Garden Hib sponsors set the new dates.
Washington High School held its annual Class Day with senior leaders presiding. Roberta Wheelan led the program, awarded athletic letters to multiple students, honored scholars, and handed the class key to junior president Don Klein. The yearbook Hi-Life was dedicated to Joe Maxwell as 350 copies were distributed.
Rev. Carl W. Klein of St. Pauls Evangelical and Re formed Church announces the annual Memorial Sunday service at his church next Sunday at 9 20 AM for one hour so attendees may also attend 10 45 services elsewhere. Patriotic organizations are invited and seats reserved. The service includes hymns prayers scripture and flag ceremony ending with The Lord s Prayer and America Benediction. Davenport police report a fire department lieutenant Charles Hintze and his wife Mary Bielefeldt 49 drowned when their auto sped down a Main street levee into the Mississippi. Coroner indicated possible suicide pact though no note found. Bodies recovered from 12 feet of water.
Funeral services for Carl Koehler were conducted yesterday at the United Presbyterian Church in Ainsworth with Rev. Karl Megdelsen officiating in place of the missing pastor Rev. W. H. Hemphill and Rev. Carl W. Klein of Washington. A quartet—A. B. Sands, Mac Wallace, Amy Hemphill, and Mrs. Fred Orris—provided music. Pallbearers included Carl Zeiglowsky Louis Marshall George Koehler Jr Paul Martin and Carl John Martin Jr. Burial followed at Ainsworth Cemetery.
Lieut. W. S. Osipoff of the U. S. Marine Corps parachutists is shown in a hospital recovering after a life threatening midair hang from a two engine Douglas transport over San Diego. He dangled for 30 minutes before being saved.
Early today a fire on the third floor of the Moffitt apartment building in Iowa City required rescue of two persons. The fire was under control in 30 minutes causing extensive damage to upper apartments and smoke and water damage to second floor units and first floor businesses.
Ray Redlinger injured in an automobile train collision and unable to farm, received a corn planting aid from neighbors at his farm. Friends led by Max Coffman and Stanley To ster joined the effort assisting with planting and thanked Mr. and Mrs. Redlinger for the community care.
In Spirit Lake a boat capsized while fishing in Anglers Bay at about 7 a.m. Mike Beckett and W. P. Woods with Woods' 14 year old son Robert were in the water an hour before Wakefield Nebraska fishermen rescued them. The three were reported improved at their Spencer homes.
James Oswalt 76 died at his Wayland home at 3 20 am from a heart attack after illness since September 1940. Funeral at 2 pm Saturday at Zehr funeral home in Wayland with Rev. Burris Moore. Burial Green Mound cemetery Trenton. Born Feb 3 1865 son of Ellis and Mrs Oswalt. married Sept 3 1903 Elizabeth McClintic. Survived by wife daughter Mrs Russell Watkins Rock Island Ill brother John Oswalt Washington sister Mrs Mary Johnson Washington. two brothers and one sister preceded him. He was a carpenter and member of the Eagle lodge.
Mrs. Jake Rudolph 71 of Rubio died at Washington county hospital after a year of ill health. Funeral arrangements pending with Hoskins funeral home Brighton, burial at Valley Cemetery. Ida Richardson born October 1870 lived near Rubio. survived by three sons Elias Pete Ernest and daughter Mrs Omer Long. three brothers and one sister living in the west.
A boat capsized as waves overturned it and sank, forcing three people to cling to oars until rescuers arrived.

A sharp temperature drop is expected tonight with light frost possible in low-lying areas of northwestern Iowa. Thunderstorms in the southeast and east central regions will precede the cooler air, with rain moving from west to east across the state. Iowa Falls reported .78 inch of rain overnight, breaking a dry spell since April 1.
Andy Woolfries former WOT Ames radio announcer will become farm service director for the Iowa Broadcasting Co starting July 1. He will handle farm broadcasts special sports programs and musical recording shows heard over KSO KRNT Des Moines and WIT Waterloom Cedar Rapids with statewide travel.
Last night before ten an alarm sent the fire department to Elsie Glassburner on the east side of the square where an electric iron left on an ironing stand ignited cloth. The fire was extinguished and smoke filled the apartment requiring overnight airing to render the rooms habitable.
German authorities said they will detain the Americans rescued from the Egyptian liner Zamzam until their identities are established beyond doubt. The statement reflects official measures by Berlin authorities amid the incident.

Crete faced furious combat as Adolph Hitler’s air army gained two footholds on the western and north central coast. Axis forces, about 15,000 strong, pressed Malemi Candia and Suda Bay while Britain, ANZAC and Greek troops sought to loosen the Axis grip. The British navy reported nine ships struck by air and Churchill warned Britain would retaliate against German actions in occupied and unoccupied France.

Restoration of the old Fort Atkinson in northeastern Iowa received material aid from year old Mrs Elizabeth Jane Sabin of Minneapolis. Her recollections of life near the fort helped locate the long-forgotten cemetery of the one time army post. The graveyard lies about a quarter mile west of the post.
