Marshalltown L awrence Seastrom and Glen Shaffer found several five and one dollar bills fluttering in a brisk breeze in the business district. They turned the money over to police and seek the owner.
The 18 month old daughter of Mr and Mrs John Adelmund living four miles southwest on a farm died from drinking kerosene as lamps were being filled at the Adelmund home.
The city council leased the ground on West Main Street known as the Main Street ball park for free automobile parking. The lighted, police patrolled lot will ease congestion in the business district especially on Saturday nights and will hold several hundred cars.
City officials discuss a $3 bicycle license for riders of all ages with plates to curb theft after more than 180 bikes were stolen last year. They seek state-law guidance on authority to implement the program.
The University of Iowa Alumni Association will hold its annual meeting in Iowa City on May 30 as part of Alumni Day. More than 1,000 alumni are expected to attend and hear President Ruch CC Butler of Chicago address the gathering after being reelected by the association this week.
Des Moines Iowa emergency relief agency announces Jeannette MacGregor assistant state relief director will serve as acting director replacing Ina T Tyler who is on a one year leave to study social conditions in Sweden Norway and Denmark. Tyler expected back in August.
Dan MacDonald aged 47 of Marshalltown was accused of stealing a $150 diamond ring from a cedar chest and selling it for $7. Fingerprint expert J. S Gladstone reported MacDonald’s left thumb print matched the surface of the chest after being confronted with the evidence.
Mrs. Gerald Palmer lunged into a hog yard to save 5 year old son Vinton George Palmer from four attacking hogs. She grabbed him as his clothing tore and carried him to safety at the fence, the farmers reported near their home.
A Mason City witness reported a man lying by the highway shoulder. The sheriff and coroner found him alive, saying he was merely resting from exhaustion after a long journey.
Shenandoah resident Miss Sarah Martin, a teacher for 69 years, retires after a long career beginning as a school ma am at 16 and spanning Farragut and Shevandoah assignments. Born in Kewanee, Illinois, she began teaching in 1872 and remained in education through her later years.
In Detroit on May 23 investigators probed the murder of Charles A. Poole a former WPA worker. Police questioned 16 Black Legion members as motives and Hooded riders were said to operate in zones while Poole’s wife denied the charges claiming she and Poole were never mistreated in their three years of marriage.
John Shields longtime Washington merchant who started the Coal and Writing Material business in 1874 died at his home May 22 1936 aged 90 years 2 months. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church and a key YMCA leader credited with establishing the local Y movement. A private funeral will be held at Sherman funeral home. He survived Civil War wounds that nearly killed him on the battlefield.
The high school band, directed by Maurice Brayton, will perform a 45 minute concert on the east lawn next Monday evening starting at eight. The program features marches mainly by Sousa and will close the band's activities for the school year as it ends.
In Vienna on May 23 two Nazis were shot and killed while attempting to storm Prince Starhemberg's castle near Ling Fight. Several were wounded and arrested, with their leader escaping presumably to Germany.
Major Lester A. Sprinkle inspected Troop F 115 Cavalry with Kansas National Guard affiliation. Only two absences noted as officers Brown Conner Layton Kiesey and others led the drill, promotions announced for Richard McDale and John Lohner, with Col. O Brien and Major Nelson present. The day saw horses and gear judged in good shape and a 90 minute mounted dismounted drill plus combat problem exercise.
Scientists note that Old Scorpions already existed in the carboniferous period and find no essential structural differences between those fossils and contemporary scorpions, indicating long-term morphological stability.
Brighton mourns Isabel DeWolf 83 who died suddenly at home after a period of poor health. Funeral at Christian church Monday 2 PM Rev R W Fillmore presiding with burial in Hil Crest Cemetery. Survived by three sons, nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren. husband predeceased by 14 years and one daughter.
Kenneth Carré, chairman of the Memorial Day music committee, outlines the program. The Washington Municipal Band will give four concerts in Central Park to start the day, followed by a parade at 10 AM led by the high school band to Woodlawn Cemetery and Film Grove. House ensembles and vocalists perform along the route with Taps at each cemetery.
The German airship Hindenburg completed its second eastward Atlantic crossing from Lakehurst to Frankfort in 48 hours 20 minutes. A tail wind pushed speed above 100 knots per hour, landing at 4 30 p m local time after departing Lakehurst at 11 05 p m Wednesday. The prior eastward record was 49 hours 19 minutes.
In Des Moines May 2b 4 INSP, Frank Miles editor of the veterans paper accuses officials of denying political appointments to needy veterans due to youth or hardship. Former Senator Dan Steck Ottumwa cites a survey claiming Governor Herring appointed more veterans than his three predecessors combined.
Homer Jackson of Moline a former Washington junior college student escaped injury when his light truck left the highway on a curve east of town after a gust of wind blew a coat into his face obscuring his vision. The accident occurred yesterday evening.
Burlington city auditor Hartington Thomas Upton and former parks department employee Arthur Hilte were arrested and charged with embezzlement after an Ely council complaint showed Far Smith’s name appeared on the payroll without wages.

After weeks of paint fumes and corridor activity, the Washington County Court House interior has been repainted from top to bottom. The project used WHA federal funds under Russell Bell supervision, with workers on a four day week. A basement painting remains to be finished by Custodian Will Sickle with help from county jail prisoners, and some rooms await final signs.

Harold Clege and Mrs Will Reaney stopped by Joe Tobin’s at the county hospital Sunday afternoon.

Barrett Foster was elected chairman of the Washington county board of health at a meeting to organize the unit. J L Fry was named vice president and Orville Elder secretary, with William Griffin and others on the executive committee. The health unit aims to begin work July first when federal funds become available and will hire staff, rent offices, and contact county groups to prepare the budget. A board meeting will follow soon.
A nine year old girl, Marcella Ventier of Clear Lake, was killed after touching a live wire that had been dangling near the ground when a tree limb broke the line in a May 23 wind and lightning storm. A WPA worker was killed by lightning in Sioux City the previous day.

Dean Kay from University of Illinois will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws at the University of Toronto in June. Kay, a Canadian native, earned his A B from Toronto in 1900 and his M A there in 1902.
Principal Miss Della Patton announced the high school letters at the class day exercises. Major awards went to Goldie Carbaugh and Alice Richardson. minor awards to Catherine Hardy and Hetty Jones among others. Forensics letters were also presented to Charles Bear and Vincent Krabill. origins include basketball and track participants.
Maurice Krayton announces nearly 125 junior high and high school students have enrolled in the Summer School of Music. Beginning and advanced instruction across all instruments runs June to August 14 with string lessons by Mr. Fry of Ottumwa. Fees include 26 cents weekly for group classes and 75 cents for private lessons.
The record notes a long time Iowa faculty member, 29 years at the university after joining from Kansas in 1940. He led the geology department starting in 1011 and was named dean of bear arts in 10146.
In Schowering Germany on May 23 Otto Seefeld, linked to a claim of a secret poison, was severely harmed as authorities investigated the death of twelve boys whose bodies were found over years in fields and woods. Most deaths were attributed to poison mushrooms or exhaustion with no signs of conflict.
Geneva May 28 Italy purchases from England in March 1936 totaled 800 gold dollars, compared with 142600 in March 1936. League of Nations report shows sanctions have driven British trade away to other countries, mainly Germany.
