Des Moines plans to entertain Chester C. Davis AAA administrator after it was announced he will speak on June 3. The event will feature Davis on a public speaking engagement in the city.
Fairfield based Thomas Glass Inc filed a voluntary bankruptcy petition in federal court listing liabilities of 317,939.86 against assets of 88,267.44. The case was referred to federal bankruptcy referee T. L. Brookhart of Washington Iowa to handle matters for Jefferson and surrounding counties.
Merritt C. Speidel president and publisher announced Iowa City’s Press-Citizen will build a new modern publishing building. The vitrified brick structure with terra cotta trim will be the year’s largest local project featuring air conditioning throughout, large glass brick panes, and a 24 page press with color units.
The Iowa State Funeral Directors Association adopted a resolution urging that county coroners be restricted to licensed physicians. The resolution also opposes funeral directors serving as coroners and calls for state legislation directing this change.
A statewide Democratic Negro meeting will be held in Des Moines to discuss political matters and organize for the elections. The event is announced by the Democratic State Central Committee headquarters.
Attorneys for the Town Power and Light company vow to appeal a jury verdict awarding Mrs Pthel May Wilbur 14032 for injuries from a July 24 accident near Milo. She was severely burned and blinded in part after coming into contact with a downed power wire during a storm, with lasting mobility impairment.
Alvin Chiquist, a farmer near Casey in Des Moines Iowa, appealed to the Supreme Court to set aside a verdict that sentenced him to five years in jail for receiving corn stolen from a neighbor valued at 22.57 dollars. Judges Dingwell recommended parole after one year.
Cherookes Zz Co. FT Ober mann, superintendent of the state hospital, offered to set aside 1000 acres of hospital grounds as a game refuge. He said 4000 trees planted this spring would provide cover and benefit patients while improving local hunting.
Afton youths on a raft led to the drowning of Robert Harriman when he fell backward into a west of Afton reservoir. Companions could not rescue him as he disappeared beneath deep water.
Officers said Dean Sherrieh 31 a farmer died from lye pot ingestion after pouring it down his throat. The case concludes without an inquest.
Vernon Bar ia, 36, is charged with altering an $1 bill to appear as $20 and passing it to his landlord Wesley Chehak who is partly blind.
Anna Egan of Cedar Rapids was elected president of the Iowa funeral directors and embalmers at the annual convention.
Des Moines reports Iowa Democratic leaders forecast a strong victory for Roosevelt era policies in the June 1 primary. New Deal cash and a robust party organization bolster campaigns. Key races include Gov Clyde L. Herring versus Rep Hubert Utterback for the U.S. Senate while Republicans debate nominees with talk of Lowden and Landon as favorites.
A storm at Perry Creek and Grandview left one dead and ten injured, three critically, as a bolt struck 500 people and another hit near a city park. WPA worker George Vehte died. three others remained between life and death. Park workers narrowly escaped fire and two others were shocked while seeking shelter. One man dropped a kerosene can when struck.
John Liska, 78, Riverside, died yesterday at University hospital Iowa City after a two week illness following a stroke two months earlier. Born January 15 1858 he married Anna Soukup July 17 1883 at Holy Trinity Richmond. Funeral Mass at St Marys church Saturday at 9 officiated by Rev Bernard Jacobameter, burial Mt Olivet Cemetery.
News reports confirm the execution of Alex McKay and Joe Kristy at San Quentin after a high profile 1935 jailbreak case. The British government's efforts to commute McKay were rejected. Earl Kimball was hanged at Folsom Prison for the slaying of James C. Kennett in Chicago.
New York May 22 INS Charles Lucky Luciano, once feared Manhattan underworld chief, is named as ruler of New York's vice scene. Madam Florence Brown testified Luciano planned a network like chain stores with salaried madams. She described meetings in Chinatown garages and restaurants and noted his fear of his name becoming linked to prostitution.
Local note confirms Hugh Thomas Cotter was in town yesterday on business matters.
In Elkader Iowa May 22 an alleged beer bottle weapon is tied to the murder of Dan Shine a 60 year old farmer bridegroom. Maynard Lenox admitted striking the first blow and Jay Hines felled Shine with a beer bottle before Lenox fired the fatal shot. Three suspects from Manchester were released after being cleared.
Washington High School celebrated its largest graduating class with a class day program for 116 seniors. Highlights included a band concert, awards, scholastic honors, Hi-Life dedication to Melvin Gingerich, and the annual class prophecy and will with a key exchange to the junior president.
At the May meeting of the Metho dist church Men's Club Dr B F Schwartz described a two month European journey including Jerusalem. He will travel with a minister friend from Grinnell and showed map details of the plan. Club officers for the coming year were elected. no meetings will be held during the summer.
Judge Frank Beehly granted a divorce yesterday to Anna K Robinson who had sued Walter F Robinson. Mr and Mrs Clyde Hill have moved from 302 Fast Madison Street to 739 South Iowa Avenue.
Dean Harland Mead announces a biology department exhibit at the junior college to be held next Monday evening in room 209 at the high school. Miss Gertrude Morrison is in charge of the event and will guide attendees through student projects.
Tomorrow Americans wear memorial poppies to honor World War dead. About a hundred thousand American Legion Auxiliary women will distribute flowers and collect funds for disabled veterans and families. Leon Beatty unit leads local observance with Mrs Paul Snakenberg as chairwoman. Volunteers will start downtown distributions early, aiming to have most residents wearing poppies by night. Poppies are produced by disabled veterans at a Des Moines VA facility, one of sixty centers nationwide. Funds support Legion and Auxiliary welfare programs with most money kept for local work. More than ten million poppies were made for tomorrow. Several attendees from a Shriners convention in Davenport are noted.
