A powerful bomb at the Buenos Aires consulate basement killed ten people and wounded four consulate staff and six teen immigrants. A second blast at a city drug store failed to fully explode. Investigators sought the bomber’s motive and origin, while the auto in front was perforated but occupants unharmed.
General Umberto Nobile departed from Kings Bay Spitzbergen at 4 35 am for the traffic pole in the Italia in favorable weather. The crew remained confident of success on the northern voyage despite the challenging polar route.
OsKaloosa woman Ellen Sampson White was elected state president at the PEO convention in Davenport. More than 150 women from across Iowa attended the sessions today.
The Cash and Carry Market operated by Jake Hertig for the past year was bought at noon by W H Mitchell. Mitchell plans to continue the cash and carry model with no deliveries and has prior ties to the market, including selling it to Hertig last year.

President Coolidge signed the Jones-White bill to sustain a strong American merchant marine by aiding private ship operators. The act boosts the loan fund from 125 million to 250 million dollars and allows loans up to 75 percent of ship values, with reinsurance for government vessels and mortgaged ships. It also raises rates for contract mail carrying and lets the U S shipping board sell vessels to private interests by a five to two vote.

Timely rains covered the state providing moisture for germinating corn to start ahead of pests. Early cornfields have been cultivated once with conditions favorable for killing weeds. Only a small amount of replanting due to flood and erosion. Oat crops report not optimistic with some acreage plowed to corn. Pastures hay and garden truck made rapid advances with a light apple crop predicted for the southwest counties.
London dated May 23 reports heavy fighting between Chinese nationalists and northerners across a wide front below Peking. Advices received in London indicate a major engagement is underway with sustained artillery and clashes.
Barbara Miller of Iowa City and formerly of Washington is named a Mortar Board member at the State University of Iowa. She is one of twelve Iowa coeds chosen for the senior women’s honorary society based on scholarship and leadership.
Frances Greiner seeks separate maintenance from Albert Greiner. A hearing before Judge J. G. Patterson was not held and will likely be rescheduled for May 31 if no settlement is reached. An order attaching Mr. Greiner’s property for 3,000 was granted earlier, and a hearing on the temporary alimony plea was set for yesterday.
Charles A. Lindbergh begins a full time post with Trans Continental Air Transport, chairing the technical committee. He will select planes and routes for a coast to coast air-rail service aiming to start within six to seven months, with a 48-hour New York to San Francisco use and extended routes under consideration.
A luncheon at Arts cafe honored Rev. Willard Wylie of the United Presbyterian Church as pastors of Washington gatherers attended. Wylie will move to Newton Iowa next week to become pastor there after five years in the community. A rocket powered car built by scientists as the first of seven steps toward a rocket airplane reached over 125 mph in 40 seconds at Berlin's Avus racecourse. Fritz von Opel piloted the car as it shot forward with flames and smoke, hitting 87 mph within six seconds.
Betty Robinson 13% of South Bend Ind wins the 1928 United States spelling championship after a four hour contest at the National Museum auditorium. Pauline Gray of Akron Ohio is runner up on the word knack. Earl Dickinson of Brighton Iowa places eighth.
President Coolidge sent to the Senate a bill raising the monthly pension for Civil War widows aged 75 and over from $30 to $49. The measure, announced in Washington, aims to boost veteran survivors facing fixed incomes.
President Coolidge vetoed the McNary Haugen farm relief bill for the second time, ruling it fails to relieve farmers and would expand bureaucracy. He warned it would fix prices, promote overproduction, and aid foreign competitors. Senate resentment surfaced as supporters pledged to pursue votes pending absent colleagues.
Mrs Winnie Palmer county superintendent reports strong countywide interest in the rural school picnic set for Saturday May 26 at Sunset Park. Weather and roads look favorable and attendance is expected to be large. The event welcomes all patrons and friends with a pot luck dinner at noon. After the picnic a class of 150 rural graduates will receive certificates. the graduation program follows at 2 pm in the high school with Rev Willard Wyse delivering the address and music and other items on the program.
United Press reports since Saturday at least 298 miners died in three coal mine disasters in Pennsylvania Kentucky and West Virginia. Rescue teams recover 13 bodies from Mather Pennsylvanias mine as Yukon Pocahontas mine traps 7 more with 10 missing and Kinver Ky Black Mountain mine entombs 75 workers with 60 escaping and five bodies recovered.
A misreading thief took the marshal’s car at city hall then returned for his own vehicle. Earl Zook, a button factory employee, visited the city hall and drove away in a car matching the marshal’s. He returned the official car upon realizing the mistake.
J K Helmick of Columbus Junction celebrated his 70th birthday by visiting relatives in Washington today. He farms hogs and says Journal advertisements boosted sales to Washington county buyers. He lives on land once bought by his father in pioneer days for 72 cents an acre.
