Iowa Farm Outlook Sees Brighter Hog Price Path

Iowa State University economist Gene Futrell reports hog marketings remain above year-ago levels with expected 15 to 20 percent rise in slaughter this month and 12 to 15 percent in June. Demand faces two negatives from unemployment and beef competition, but broiler supply should drop about 5 percent. Prices in May are seen $17 to $19 with a summer high near $23 in July, and October-December prices likely hold above 1970 lows despite a possible late-year downtrend.
