Sioux City on first reading approved a proposed new ordinance for garbage collection after a district court ruling six months prior found the dumping ground beyond city limits a nuisance and health hazard. The plan requires separation of garbage and rubbish and mandates water tight trucks for business district collection.
Mrs John Tur ipseed received a letter from her daughter Bertha who had left home three years earlier. Bertha, writing from Truckee California on 19, said she was well had married and was the mother of two children She asked her mother’s forgiveness and promised to answer each letter sent from noon The daughter had disappeared with Virginia Lydis Sappeared after leaving for Woodrow Wilson junior high school one winter morning three years ago
Two Grinnell men and Ted Cross of Colfax were injured when a car collided with a power mower operated by Cross on Highway 6 west of Colfax. J. W. Frizzell, 74, retired farmer and former state representative, and his son Wayne Frizzell, 47, were involved. J. W. Frizzell faced a justice court charge for failure to have control of his vehicle.
In Council Bluffs Mary Tamms a child wandered from home to play on railroad tracks. While crossing the rails a North Western Railroad switch engine approached. Darlene Snipes an eyewitness said the girl stepped into the engine path and was killed as the engine passed over her. Her father William Tamms a WPA worker and her mother two brothers and sister survive.
California woman Doris Brown Browning is sought on a kidnaping charge after allegedly taking her son, David Roberts, 7, from a Manly school. County Attorney L B Plummer said the case was filed by Mr and Mrs H Roberts of Manly. The child had been staying with his grandparents C H and Mrs Roberts when abducted. The mother has remarried after her divorce and is believed to have fled, possibly toward China with U S Marines securing the father's location.
William Lucas, 2, a transient with a 17 year Fort Madison penitentary sentence for a murder he claimed he did not commit, died after a cart attack in the Great Western railroad yards at Waterloo. Emory Watkins of Saint Joseph, Missouri, told investigators Lucas had been convicted at Clarinda for the Emma Moore murder, her body found May 6, 1902, and he was given a life term but paroled in 1919.
Des Moines Iowa highway patrolmen collected $27,578.50 in fines for April. Safety Commissioner Karl Fischer said the total was $11,110.27 more than the amount collected from offenders arrested in 1940. Patrol arrested 70 alien drivers during the period.
Delbert Hill and his wife Florence Hill were arraigned on illegal possession and sale of intoxicating liquor. Both pleaded guilty and received sentences. Hill fined 300 dollars plus costs, Florence Hill three months in Rockwell City reformatory with suspension on good behavior and parole to the sheriff. They operate a cafe and beer tavern at Columbus Junction and admitted selling whiskey at Swailes dance pavilion in Highland township. The judge noted no prior record and urged enforcement of liquor laws while granting leniency. County Attorney John C. Owens and L. J. Kehoe represented the state and defendants respectively.
Des Moines May 21 UP corn planting is about eight days ahead of normal in Iowa this year. It was 2 percent complete on May 8. Planting is most advanced in the northwest where 94 to 100 percent is completed and least advanced in the north central district near the eastern border and from the northeast corner southwest to the south central district. Earliest fields are up and some corn has been cultivated per the Des Moines weather bureau weekly bulletin.
Ottumwa, May 21. Jesse A. Flack at 19 was sentenced to 10 years in the state penitentiary for an auto collision that killed Mrs. Glen Speers, 63, wife of a Bloomfield minister. The case centered on the fatal crash near Ottumwa.
The report notes April arrests mainly for reckless driving or speeding. The average fine per patrolman was $464.34 in April, compared with $149.71 for the same month in 1940, reflecting higher penalties or enforcement intensity this year.
The Washington county selective service board announces two more draftees for induction on Sunday June 1. Harold Edward Reranek of Riverside and Harry Fred Strathman northwest of town are ordered to report at 3 15 PM to board and take the afternoon bus to Fort Des Moines. Two others left earlier for Fort Des Moines bringing total inducted to 22 from the county if they pass the physical. Ronald Hawkins of Ainsworth and Marions L Moberly of Riverside departed this morning. Sam McCleery of Washington is set to be sent to the army May 28.
The Ascension Day observance for the Bethlehem commandery Knights Templar will be held Thursday evening at 7 46 pm at the Masonic temple. One candidate will be conferred the order of the temple with refreshments to follow in the dining room. Dr. R C Keagy will speak on the day’s significance and Knights Templar observance. Attendees include members from Mt Pleasant Fairfield and Kevarrqua. Washington group association members and Bethlehem commandery plans are coordinated by Russell Goodin.
Vichy May 21. One hundred forty American passengers of the Egyptian liner Zamzam are at St. Jean de Luze south of Bordeaux on the French occupied coast. German authorities notified the U S Consul Waterman at Bordeaux of the arrival. Waterman left at once to arrange housing for the Americans.
United Press reports Luftwaffe reinforcements pouring into Crete as Churchill warns of intensified struggle. Parachute and air troop landings target Suda Bay Candia Retimo Canea. British statements say gains limited while German air attacks and transport losses continue. Berlin says German forces occupy important points.
Judge P. J. Siegers of Newton held court here for two days and pledged to return to Washington for another March term session next Tuesday and Wednesday. He set the Employers Mutual Liability Insurance Co of Wisconsin vs M H Hemmings F B Dickinson and Co and the Washington school district for trial on June 8. In the R G Shaver vs Peter Rourk injunction suit the court overruled the defendant’s motion to dismiss.
Federal conciliator James F. Dewey announced a six day strike at Hudson Motor Car Co. is settled. The agreement with United Automobile Workers CIO covers wages after a six hour conference, ending a dispute that hindered $30,600,000 of defense orders and work on defense projects.
Notice to sailors all men who have served in the United States are invited to attend a meeting at the Legion rooms at eight o'clock Friday evening May 23 to plan a water memorial service early on Memorial Day. Interested persons can see Bernard Walker or Archie Buwer for information.
DES MOINES May 21 UP Receipts from beer permits and the four cent a gallon barred tax totalled 97445 during April a decrease of 35402 from April 1949 the state tax commission reported today Cigarette tax income however totalled 175058 an increase of 8641 over April 1940 and 3507 more than total collections during March this year.
Leslie Gates chairs the Dairy Week promotion committee and has secured posters to distribute to dairy distributors in the county. A meeting of interested parties was held, while dairymen contribute to a fund for the program to be observed June 9 to 14. A Dairy Week queen has not yet been chosen but will be purchased. A next committee meeting is scheduled for Monday.
Dean C A Phillips of the University of Iowa commerce college finds English data do not indicate a near term rapid rise in American prices or wages. He notes England saw wage gains 15 percent and wholesale prices up 40 percent, while U S profits lagged, suggesting American price growth will be restrained by unemployment of capital and high inventories.
University of Iowa will award 1204 degrees and certificates at the 81st commencement on June 2, registrar’s office announces. The figure tops last year’s 1150 but trails the 1939 total of 1226. Some applications may not meet requirements.
Grade four to six students from Lincoln and Stewart elementary schools will hold a joint play day Thursday from 1:00 to 2:30. Boys directed by Kenneth Kimberlin will play softball and run a track meet on Lincoln grounds, while girls led by Martha Trewin will play softball against the other school and compete in races and games on Stewart grounds. Refreshments will be served by the Parent Teacher Association, and one girl from each school will be named sportsmanship honors recipient.
Leon Beatty post of the American Legion met last night to set Memorial Day plans. Archie Euwer leads the color guard and firing squad selections with names including Robert Noonan Ives McKay E A Ralston and William Tweeten. Members report to Legion rooms at nine on May 30 wearing Legion caps. Commander Howard Miller and Fred Downing oversee color guard and seating matters. Another note invites Purple Heart recipients to a Waterloo veterans convention June 1 3 and urges reservations for the Des Moines state convention in August.
Wesleyan graduates at Iowa Wesleyan College will hear Dr. Douglas Ross Collier of the Chiengmai leper asylum, Thailand, address the 99th commencement exercises on June 2. The 10 a.m. event in the college chapel caps a four day program starting Friday May 30 with the annual commencement play and continues Saturday with activities.
The German foreign office asked the United States to withdraw its diplomatic staff from Paris by June 10 for military reasons. Berlin said Paris would no longer host American attaches, aligning with the French government’s move to Vichy. Consular staff were not included, though embassy personnel held dual commissions.
In San Francisco on May 21, metal workers ignored AFL CIO pickets and returned to work at two of eleven shipyards. The walkout had halted defense contract work worth 600 million dollars for 12 days, with boos but no violence. John P. Frey led about 1000 workers through CIO lines at the Moora dry dock plant in Oakland.
At a special assembly at the junior high school the Daughters of the American Revolution awarded medals for seventh and eighth grade essay contests. Janet Martin won in seventh grade for Paul Revere's Ride, presented by Mrs A Anderson. eighth grade winner Gwendolyn Ramseyer wrote Mothers of Famous Men with subject Cyrus McCortmack, presented by Mrs Acheson. Ellen Caldwell presided, Erma Turnipseed read scripture, and John Stewart played a clarinet solo.
Troops reinforced Erie forest rangers as a large forest fire near St Donat Quebec, driven by strong winds, forced 13 families from Lake Quareau homes and destroyed 8,000,000 feet of timber along with two power dams a saw mill and lumber yard. Exhaustion among fighters and lack of rain hampered efforts.
Dr. Charles H. Myers class of 1900 will deliver the baccalaureate address on June 1 at the senior breakfast and alumni events. Myers serves at North Woodward Avenue Congregation Church in Detroit Michigan and is slated to speak amid alumni activities and board meetings.
