Minburn public schools for the second year in a row received the highest composite rating in the Iowa Every Pupil Testing Program preliminary to the state test. Superintendent J. B. Duncan announced. Minburn High School led in ninth and twelfth grade English.
Ernest Taylor 44, a farmer, was killed when his tractor overturned while he plowed a ditch near his home. The tragedy occurred during routine field work with the machine pinning him beneath it.
Iowa City professor John W Ashton of State University of Iowa will move to the University of Kansas as head of the English department starting in September. Ashton has served at Iowa since 1923, rising to associate professor.
Jack Elliott Sav age of Kinaville Grinnell college graduate wins Des Moines Alumni Club scholarship to Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. The $100 award was decided by the committee on scholarships at Harvard Business School, with five other seniors competing.

Fort Dodge Iowa Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Ed Breen called for legislating the chain stores out of existence in Iowa. He argued the system hurts farmers and urged taxing the chain stores to enable farmers to regain land ownership, while expressing no quarrel with individual operators.

Memorial Day events are arranged for 0:45 AM at the courthouse.
Captain O J Brown reports Major Clyde B Bell praises Troop F armory layout and drill grounds as the best seen. The regulars inspect the armory horses and equipment, with only commendations. Four injured troopers were absent due to a Sunday accident. two others missed the parade. A veterans group plans a marker at the Legion tree near the cemetery road.
Louisville on May 22 Frank Gannett Republican hopeful told the Lincoln Club that national defense and peace are hampered while President Roosevelt stays in the White House. He faulted New Deal debt for weak preparedness and urged industry support and tax reform to speed recovery and readiness. He argued against a third term and urged sticking with a chosen course for four years.
A Senate Naval Appropriations Subcommittee approved a record breaking 1,458,66,728 Naval supply bill including a quarter billion for new warplanes and to complete warships. The Senate resumed debate on the 1,823,252,724 Army bill to build a full peacetime force of 2840,000 men with thousands of airplanes and large stocks of munitions.
Alfred M. Landon republican presidential nominee in 1936 met President Roosevelt in Washington for a luncheon conference on national problems from the European war. He was welcomed by reporters but did not reveal details of the talks.
President Roosevelt told Congress the sequence of events makes it essential to move the labor department's immigration and naturalization service to the justice department. He said the change will help the government act quickly against aliens who threaten the public interest without impairing local status or civil liberties of about three million residents.

Hl A Pauls long active in Washington affairs died of a heart attack Monday in Waterlog where he had recently lived. He served on the board of education and on Parsons college board, led the American Wearl factory, headed Pauls Lumber in Washington, and was an elder at the Presbyterian church. Surviving are his wife and son Leslie Pauls of Churial. his eldest son Fela Pauls gave his life in World War I. Burial followed at Kim Grove cemetery with Dr F W East officiating.
