Hamilton L. Newsom files a $2,900 suit against Council Bluffs and the North Western railway claiming a 10 foot ditch on railroad property dug by WPA workers caused a broken hip. He seeks damages for injuries and medical costs.
Keokuk census committee of the Chamber of Commerce plans volunteer workers to count residents in all seven wards. Volunteers will report any persons missed by census takers to ensure a complete tally.
Sioux City will vote on a proposal to issue 154000 dollars in bonds to finance completion of the municipal airport. One hundred fifteen thousand dollars has already been expended. The 150000 dollar bond would be used mainly to construct concrete runways.
Walter Williams a Bancroft hatchery employee suffered singed hair and eyebrows when his car caught fire in the east part of town. He lost 1,200 baby chicks valued at about 50 dollars and the car interior was badly damaged.
Fred Fulton sues B V Mahannah in district court for 25000 alleging alienation of his wife’s affections. Fulton states the couple were married ten years and lived together until February 21 when Mahannah allegedly made advances to Mrs Fulton while he was away on business.
Alexander Loudon minister of The Netherlands to the United States and Madame Loudon will attend the dedication of Central college’s Douwstra chapel. The ceremony marks the $100,000 chapel’s completion with students faculty and trustees as hosts.
Four men pleaded guilty before District Judge A. B. Lovejoy in Waterloo and received 60 day jail terms for driving while intoxicated.
Ames reports a worm outbreak on elm trees in southern Iowa. Des Moines finds 1/8 to 1/4 inch larvae on unbanded or poorly banded trees. Entomologist Gunderson urges immediate lead arsenate spraying with oil or calcium caseinate to prevent defoliation. Banding failure cited as a cause.
Seventy persons attended the WPA picnic dinner at Sunset park in the pavilion as part of This Work Pays Your Community week. Rev. Carl Klein spoke, WPA project supervisors gave three minute talks, bingo followed with prizes from recreation and sewing room projects, and a dinner committee organized the event.
In a Look magazine article Wendell Willkie argues Roosevelt should run for a third term. He says Roosevelt could beat the Republicans but many Democrats might prefer another candidate or even vote Republican if Roosevelt runs. Willkie calls Roosevelt the champion New Dealer and notes it is the defining issue of the next campaign. He adds no clear decision yet on a third term.
Word of H A Pauls death states he died suddenly yesterday in Waterloo. Graveside services are set for tomorrow at Elm Grove cemetery conducted by Dr F W Eastwood. He was about 70, formerly in lumber with brother George in Washington and survived by wife and son Leslie of Chicago.
A Waterloo fireman died and twelve occupants were saved from the Russell Lamson hotel fire on May 21. Herman Otto, 45, succumbed to smoke after being driven from the building twice. Twelve people were hauled to safety from the fourth and fifth floors by ladders. The fire began in a third floor sample room, with damages around 2500 dollars. Otto left a wife a daughter and a stepson.
District Census Supervisor John A Wallbank of Mt Pleasant announced unofficial population figures for Washington County towns from the 1940 federal census subject to correction. The figures cover each town in the county.
A two day conference is set for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at the local Foursquare church. Dr. Howard P. Courtney of Urbana Illinois and Rev. L B Edwards missionary from Panama will be the special speakers. Services begin at 7 20 each evening. The public is invited.
Berlin reports claim General Henri Giraud, a top Allied commander in the western front, has been captured by German forces. No independent confirmation given.
Funeral services for Mrs. A. B. Dill aged 81 will be held Wednesday at 2 30 PM at Sherman funeral home. Dr F W Eastwood will conduct in the Presbyterian church while Rev William M Nichol is away. Burial will be Elm Grove cemetery. She was born January 17 1859 at Washington county and taught school before marrying Mr Dill on September 28 1881. She and her husband lived near Washington, moved several times, and spent years in town 1920 to 1923. She leaves husband a daughter Mrs Mable McCaulley and son J B Dill plus extended family.
Weeks Weeks of the Salem community was admitted to Washington county hospital after a lamp filled with gasoline exploded. He suffered severe burns on his hands while his family, seated nearby, watched as the lamp sputtered before ignition. He rolled in grass to smother the flames and escaped without further damage.
At last night’s meeting the city council adopted a resolution authorizing an agreement with the state highway commission to provide routine inspection and minor adjustments of traffic signals north of the North Second Avenue underpass at the Fifth Street intersection. The highway commission will reimburse the city once signals are in use. Council read relief from those who received copies of the resolution urging the commission to complete original plans for rerouting roads No. 9 and No. 1 through Washington. Governor Wilson offered to raise the matter with the highway commission and will discuss at the next conference. C. Coy Kendall noted the proposal would be referred for consideration, and President O. F. McNulty of the state safety council lauded the move to ease congestion and boost safety in the business district.
Capt O J Brown of Troop F says outdoor fighting pits are set in the area west of the new armory and will be used for drill if weather allows. If not the annual inspection proceeds indoors. Major Clyde B Bell will inspect the armory and equipment this afternoon.
The centor play Almost Eighteen will be presented Friday at 8 o'clock in the high school auditorium. It is a three act comedy by Dana Thomas. D Wayne Felton a 17 year old Washington high school student suffered a broken neck and serious injuries after a car driven by Henry Miller left the road and crashed into a tree at Oakland Mills southwest of Mt Pleasant He was taken to University hospital Iowa City for examination and weights treatment will follow for about 48 hours His mother Mrs Laura Felton was notified also injured were Picard Bidwell and David training Henry Miller released from hospital. the car owned by Howard Miller was a total wreck.
Firemen were called to transport the Farmers' Mutual truck to Floyd Crayne place north of the New Haven church. A brooder house fire occurred with a hole burned in the floor. fire was extinguished before arrival and minimal damage done. Harvey Meek drove the truck to the scene.
Mr and Mrs John Sutten and daughter Betty Joan of Galt California arrived Sunday night to spend two weeks with his father J A Sutten and grandmother Mrs Nellie Sutten and with her parents at Sandy Hook.
