Fred White, superintendent of the Creston division of the Burlington railroad, announced improvements for Iowa the railroad will include sleeper banking of curves and laying of new steel to modernize the Creston line.
Des Moines Chief of Detectives Jack Brophy says Donald Martin, 20, confessed to stabbing Cletus Wieland, 31, during a May 14 fight in Des Moines.
Clarence funeral services are planned for Fred D. Meyer who died at a Cedar Rapids hospital after being kicked by a horse. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
In Des Moines one of the three teen strike closed laundries resumed operations. The University laundry owned by J. M. Mills opened after a separate agreement with its employees. Owners insist each laundry must negotiate separately with its workers.
Sheriff C F Cross of Harrison County ordered a search for two youths about 13 who posed as magazine subscription salesmen. A woman who checked their references found them fake. The boys were in a car with a Texas license, officers said.
Rob Kotlin a 20 year old furnace worker earned six dollars by running a half mile down Main Street in pink shorts and shoes. Jim Crosby an orchestra leader offered a dollar per block for each block Kotlin traversed in the business district. Kotlin carried a raincoat ready to wear if police appeared and was forced to put it on twice.
Dr. C R Fenton treated Estel for hysteria triggered by a minor eyelid infection. Bandages were removed and Estel sees with both eyes but remains in a dark room. The physician expects eyesight to return to near normal in time.
Rolla Ellis of Corning, a farmer, lost his two young sons when the horse they rode collapsed into a muddy ditch and suffocated them.
In Hampton area a carload of four gypsies stopped before G. W. Miller of Dumont. A woman jabbered then followed him as he backed away. They fled with his umbrella and $140. Nearby Carl Jensen, an elderly Hampton resident, was pushed to the ground by three gypsies and robbed of $2.
Mrs Pertha Harnuge of Des Moines, a defeated Democratic candidate for the Iowa legislature from Polk county, will join the state historical department as a clerk in the archives section at 1275 dollars a year starting June 1. The appointment was announced by Co. & Klingeman, state curator.
Fort Dodge man Dick Moore, 22, was killed when a car struck a parked trailer. William Ogle of Des Moines suffered injuries that may prove fatal in the highway accident. Ole and Moore had stopped with their auto and trailer when the crash occurred. The vehicle was driven by Frank Thiede, a Dodge deputy United States.
In Bilbao on May 22 Gen Emelio Mola opened a large attack in the Dimas sector with 19 000 troops and heavy armor but the loyalists repelled the assault after fierce artillery and tank clashes. The battle caused heavy rebel losses while loyalist forces countered fiercely.
A 1937 Washington junior high marble champion Bob Faulkner is carried on by supporters after defeating Gene Watson in the final. The annual spring marble tournament has run for a dozen years under oversight of Carlton. If Faulkner defends his title next year, he will be a two time winner, following Dale Booth.
Former President Herbert Hoover spoke at a Detroit boys clubs meeting urging mobilization of American youth to preserve peace and democracy. He warned that Europe and its fascist powers mobilized children and called for more boys clubs and slum clearance as part of the solution. Hoover also toured Greenfield Village with Henry Ford.
A. E. Baldrige announced that Robert Oakley will speak at Kim Grove cemetery and Rev. Arthur Atack at Woodlawn on Memorial Day morning Monday May 1. James H. Baird is the general chairman and a full program outline will be released next week.
Judge B O Tankersley sustained a motion for a new trial for Lote L Harris an Oskaloosa trucker found guilty of stealing 168 bushels of corn from a Benton County farmer The motion cited error in the judge instructions and a second trial date was not set.
A vehicle collided with a trailing caravan and crushed two individuals between the car and the trailer, according to an initial police report. Investigators are reviewing debris and interviewing witnesses to determine the sequence of events and the vehicles involved.
Dr. Dale D. Welch, president of the University of Dubuque and former head of its speech department, will give the Washington High School and Junior College commencement address on June 4. A noted public speaker on religion, education, and citizenship, he has led civic groups in Dubuque and earned his degrees from Dubuque, Cornell, and Coe College.
Miss Jessie Bell Stewart will return tomorrow to Oakdale where she is employed after spending two weeks visiting her sister Mrs Rue.
Corwith Iowa May 22 detectives grilled Frank Weider 50 hours after the beer parlor operator Bert Anfinson was found slain. Weider claims he left the victim before the murder and says a bloodstained shirt found near the body is chicken blood. Authorities test the stain for human origin and say no motive or fingerprints are yet established. Coroner Boughton and Dr Walley report twenty head wounds from the autopsy.
Oskaloosa District Court recessed yesterday evening with Judge J. G. Patterson set to return next Wednesday for more March term business. Rulings on two cases tried Thursday and Friday are not yet issued.
The Ames Ministerial Association plans action to block a state liquor store after reports of 20 to 40 new outlets before fall. They issue a resolution to the Ames city council thanking residents who oppose a store and noting concerns for students at Iowa State College.
Two Chicago hitch-hikers Norman Westberg 17 and Howard Christenson 16 await arraignment in Onida for the murder of Ada Carey 26 a school teacher killed after giving them a ride. Carey identified the youths before dying.
In a violent engagement at a Korean village, forty men were killed as troops and police faced a strong bandit force armed with weapons. The clash erupted May 22, with casualties mounting amid ongoing security operations.
The Rock Island plans new passenger train schedules effective Sunday June 6. Two daytime trains will run between Chicago and the southwest with one departure around six evening and arrival near midnight, aligning with a former late train. A new eastbound night train is also expected. Station agent Lewis Goodlander has limited details and will learn more after visiting Chicago.

A Korean border raid by Chinese forces crossed the Yalu River and seized 20 villagers in Hotaili. One Soviet soldier was reported killed during the operation.
Soviet aviation officials praised a USSR expedition after flying over the north pole and landing fifteen miles away to establish a scientific base. The party left Moscow in March and began at Prince Rudolf Island where the world’s northern radio station was set up.
Edward Swanson 24 testified before a coroner's jury investigating Avin Giselson's murder after a dream he claimed foresaw the crime. He allegedly described a hunchbacked man and a large assailant demanding money then killing Giselson, a scene he said he witnessed in a dream.
About 450 coal miners refuse to evacuate Superior Coal's No. 4 mine after a three day sit down, staying underground 300 feet. They demand union leaders meet with the company president and seek shared employment at No. 1 mine. Union calls the strike outlaw and blames radical elements. They plan to reconvene today.
Troop F 113th Cavalry passed a thorough inspection led by Major Lester Sprinkle of the 114th Cavalry. Attendees included Capt. Jay Brown and Lt. Walter Conner while 100 percent of the 68 enlisted men were present. Local townspeople observed as equipment and horses were found in fine condition.
In Los Angeles on May 22, Nancy Fisher was hospitalized after a turtle incident. She was riding with Morris Shuken when a woman ran into the street to save a pet turtle. Shuken braked, and Miss Fisher went through the windshield.
