Des Moines column reports Francis Johnson, president of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, urging Iowa senators in Washington to back a measure allowing marketing agreements on covered crops and adding by amendment provisions for canning crops.
The aging founder of Standard Oil died at his Florida residence after a heart weakening, just short of his planned century. His body will be moved by rail to North Tarrytown New York for private funeral rites and Thursday burial in Lake View Cemetery Cleveland Ohio. Rockefeller donated hundreds of millions to charity and institutions and built a global dynasty.
Overnight burglars broke into Brenton Lumber, taking $130 in cash and two checks. A $29 check payable to the lumber company signed James McWair and a $3.53 check signed M W Colling were missing. Sheriff C L Knee of Adel urged officers to watch for the checks while the investigation continues.
Robert B. Miller secretary to the Iowa state board of control since July 1 1955 announces his resignation effective June 11. He cites uncertainty of political jobs and has drawn a salary of 2550 dollars annually.
Davenport man Lawrence Callaway said he slept in his gate after changing a tire and woke five hours later to find his billfold with $26 and his watch stolen. Police report he went to sleep at 2 a.m. and was robbed soon after.
The Catholic directory shows the archdiocese of Dubuque covering 41 counties with 124 294 Catholics. Sioux City Davenport Des Moines and other dioceses report populations of 69 114 68 749 and 39 629 respectively.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Gamble store at Sioux Rapids and partially burned the Sioux cafe in the same building. Damage estimated at 7,000 dollars. A radio shop and a hardware storeroom in the building were also destroyed. The structure will be rebuilt.
Word reached here that Samuel Yoray of Syracuse Kansas a plaintiff attorney in the Wright versus Deaker case was killed Saturday night in an automobile accident about 25 miles east of St Joseph Missouri Yoray aged about 65 was county attorney in Hamilton county Kansas George Wright who received the news did not learn accident details.
Senior class presents "A Full House" at the high school auditorium on Thursday and Friday evenings. Tickets go on sale Wednesday at 8 am at Phillips and Hebner's drug store. Seniors may buy in advance and activity ticket holders are admitted at the door on performance nights.
More than 400 coal miners on day four of a sit down strike weigh peace terms carried by their committee after a six hour conference with Superior Coal Company officials. The terms reportedly call for mine evacuation and possible contracts between the company and the miners union.
In near Miechow Poland a hurricane and cloudburst left at least 50 dead. Several villages were ruined and thousands of cattle drowned. Damage was estimated at four million dollars.

Jesse W. Shalla a longtime farmer living nine miles northwest of Washington died at county hospital at 1:00 AM from internal injuries after his team ran away last Wednesday. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at L. A. Jones funeral home, with Rev. Arthur Atack to officiate, burial in Richmond cemetery. He was born June 29 1899 in Richmond county and married Blanche Navy of Chicago November 29 1922. they had five children Jeanne Helen Jesse Jr James Allen and two infants Janice Lee and Jo Anne. He is survived by his wife three children his parents two brothers George and Lloyd and a sister Mrs Elia Miller, with many relatives.
Grace Ann Hesser, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Glenn Hesser of Coppock, died last night after severe coughing spells from whooping cough. Born April 9 1937 she is survived by three brothers Dickin Gerald Kenneth and sisters Betty Bertha and one sister who died in infancy. Funeral services were held at 2 o clock this afternoon at the home with burial in Brighton cemetery.
Mayor R L Lytle issued a proclamation designating Saturday May 29 as Poppy Day in Washington urging citizens to wear memorial poppies for World War dead. The text honors 75882 lives lost and calls for public observance. American Legion Auxiliary volunteers will distribute poppies and collect donations for veterans and families.

Sheriff H M Putnam brought Dale Kerr from Idaho to Washington for forging a $125 check signed Ray Sojka. Kerr may plead guilty and be arraigned before Judge J G Patterson when he returns from Oskaloosa. Sheriff made the long drive from Cheyenne to Washington in two days.
Miss Lucille Nicola a high school teacher in New London will spend the summer vacation with her parents Mr and Mrs Earl Nicola at their home.
Mrs H F Hesseltine aged 84 died at 6 20 Sunday morning at 1926 Fast Van Buren Washington. She had been ill for a week and had lived in Washington county most of her life. Funeral services are set for 2 36 Tuesday at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Rev Vernon Carter officiating, burial in Elm Grove cemetery. She was born Angeline Wood October 13 1850 in Decatur county Iowa and married Horatio F Hesseltine in 1869. She belonged to Pleasant Ridge United Brethren church and the Journal’s Three Quarter Century club. Surviving are several children including Ide Kephart Winters Calif Emma Spring Clayton N M John W Hesgeltine Mt Pleasant Albert Crawfordsville Frank Washington Mrs W E Zook Washington Mrs R P Moriarty Washington and Lee Washington, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren. Brother John Wood Twin Falls Idaho sister Mrs Carrie Voyt Oklahoma.

Cleveland May 24 The birth of a son to Col. and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh on May 13 was revealed in a letter to Mrs Charles L Cutter grandmother of Mrs Lindbergh. The letter said the baby was born in England and both mother and child were very well. The Cutter family is related to Mrs Lindbergh through her mother Mrs Dwight W Morrow.
