Adelbert Ward a farmer northeast of here was found dead under his tractor. He had been blowing all night and the machine apparently turned over while he tried to drive from a ditch. Local authorities said he was crushed to death.

John L Lewie steel workers union triumphs in a plantside election at Jones Laughlin Steel Corp. with 17 028 voting yes and 4 207 no for union representation by 2 to 1 margin. The result grants the union an exclusive bargaining contract under recent strike settlement terms.
Testimony was introduced today before Judge J. G. Patter 200 in an equity case Dera Pp. Wright vs Edwin L and Ruby Deuker. It involves claims and counterclaims for several hundred dollars in a landlord and tenant matter. The farm concerned is west of Wellman with D. Morrison and Eardley Bell for the plaintiff and L. J. A Keokuk man dies after a car crash in Keokuk Iowa authorities say his skull was crushed in the collision reporting details remain scarce as investigators probe the fatal incident in May.
Roscoe Red Jackson a 36 year old hitchhiking slayer was hanged in Galena Missouri for the murder of Karl Buzarth of Evansville Indiana a salesman in August 1934. He spoke to about 2000 spectators at the scaffold stating he met death with a heart free of hatred and that the law was doing its duty.
The Washington county district court clerk reports 26 percent more marriages in 1937 than the same period in 1936. Through May 20 the county issued 44 licenses versus 33 last year, with 85 by June 1 and 127 for all of last year. New licenses yesterday include Howard Lent and Ardis C. Yoder, Carl Rotzinger, Marcella White, Archie Perrin, and Clare Smith Mott.
British moves to broker a Spain truce allowing foreign withdrawals stalled as both sides refused. Rebel General Franco rejected the plan and Loyalist Premier Juan Negrín said there is no possibility of mediation. Britain and France pressed on seeking Allied approval amid German and Italian weariness of losses.
Waldo George Boedecker of St. Charles Missouri died after a car failed to make a curve nine miles north of here. He was the 161st Iowa traffic death this year. James Tracy, driver, had a 50 to 60 chance to recover from internal injuries at the scene of the wreck at the junction of roads 61 and 161.
Students at Washington Junior High will perform a three part May fete next Wednesday at 2 30 in Sunset Park weather permitting. The program features a May queen coronation America’s Heritage of Music and Maypole dances with bands and costumed participants. If rain interrupts the event it will be postponed to the following day.

Coroner Kenneth Boughton ordered an inquest and burial in Belmond after a drinking party theory.
