Iowa City Frances Fourt, a 20 year old University of Iowa co ed and Phi Beta Kappa by correspondence, awaits a serious chest operation to remove one lung this week. The aim is to spare the remaining lung from infection after tuberculosis kept her bedridden for two years.
Two brothers who met two sisters on a skating rink nearly five decades ago will mark their golden wedding anniversaries together in Los Angeles where they now reside. On May 31 the couples are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hopping and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hopping.
Glenwood Clarence Price, a 49 year old farm hand, was found guilty of first degree murder in the deaths of his grandniece Edith Kuhl a 13 year old girl from Pacific Junction. The jury recommended life in prison with hard labor.
Two blasts wrecked the two story Brie building known as Myron Hall on South Second Street. Erected in the late 1970s as an opera house, the damage to the structure and contents is estimated at $65,000.

A local barber shop incident injures a boy employed as a shoe shiner. Jack Burks, 19, suffered second degree burns after he tipped a gasoline can while building a fire and it ignited. He attempted to extinguish the blaze and sustained burns.
Des Moines ruling by A TT Wunk, state industrial commissioner, finds the state not liable for the death of John J. Lawton from injuries sustained during a CWA protest in Lee County on May 10, 1922. The decision limits state responsibility for the worker’s death.
Dr Ewen M McEwan was announced as dean of the University of Iowa College of Medicine by Dr John T McClintock chair of the interim committee. McEwan heads the university department of anatomy.
Davenport class B beer permits cost 200 dollars with no limit on numbers. Sales must stop from 1 am to 6 am daily except Saturday night after midnight. Transfer to another class requires 25 dollars. President class B permit fee is 100 dollars.
Names on a dime chain letter helped Mrs. Lucille Delanarde of St. Louis reconnect with her half-brother Milton Mahon of Blakesburg Iowa after 26 years apart. The contact came through Mrs. Carl Perkins of Arkansas City, their former home.
Desa Moines reports about 16 000 licenses will be taken out in Iowa under the new cream grading law, according to Rey Murray secretary of agriculture.
Des Moines figures fight over allegations of a state slot machine racket centered in the attorney general's office. Walter Maley and Ed O'Connor deny the grand jury testimony, while Tom Conroy faces charges of extortion and interference with justice. Page testimony links a Maley office meeting to an early racket setup.
Chairman Glen Mace of the Washington county Republican central committee seeks names and addresses of all expected Springfield Illinois attendees for the Midwest Republican meeting June 10 and 11. The event begins the 1966 campaign and may include a special Burlington railway train for travel. Mr and Mrs T A Michels of Washington plan to attend and others from the county are expected.
The Special Day committee of the Chamber of Commerce announces Rooster Day on May 29 with four teen cash prizes for parade winners across seven classifications and every entrant receiving a special gift. Prizes include $5 for nearest Washington total of roosters, $2.50 for other Washington guesses and outside Washington guesses, $2 for farthest farm distance, and $1.25 prizes for multiple parade categories. A rooster race at 4:00 across the square will award top prizes of $1.50 and related honors. Leigh Soule directs the parade with a probable feathered uniform.
G A R veterans will be honored guests at a Memorial Service held Sunday morning during the regular worship at the Methodist church. The service is the official memorial for the year selected by the city ministerial association and will begin at 10 45 a m. Veterans of different wars are invited to attend. Patriotic organizations should meet at the courthouse at 10 30 a m to attend as a group.
Des Moines report shows Iowa corn planting 57 percent complete, two days behind average due to rains. The weekly bulletin by Charles D. Reed notes rainfall this month near average and reports chinch bugs have disappeared in some areas.
L A Jones announces Ascension Day observance on Memorial Day May 30 by Bethlehem Commandery Knights Templar. No cemetery services. a dinner at the Masonic temple at 6:30 followed by Templar work and a speech by Dr Fr CC Witzigman. Two candidates await conferring of the degree. one will receive Friday evening, the other Ascension Day.
Sacramento dispatch notes Jientes urges not to mail a telegram vote and mocks telegraph influenced lobbying. He remarks senators should have made up minds by now and questions the effectiveness of telegram voting compared to a traditional vote. He points out telegrams can be repeated by any funded signer.
The Young America P T A will present the play Silas Smidge from Turnip Ridge at the county home tonight. Admission is 10 and 15 cents with proceeds going to the school. residents of the home will be guests and enjoy the performance.

Will broadcast events through a public address system and music to fill the schedule. Coe is noted with prize details including 2nd prize of 1.90 and 3rd prize. Farmers from far and wide expected to attend. Deadline at 4:00.

Des Moines meeting of Iowa county corn-hog committees praised harmony and clarity. They protested rejected permits for production base period increases and welcomed Wickard's modified orders. They urged future AAA input to stay advisory as Evans plans a review of past rejections.
Funeral services for Mrs Mary B Johnson were held yesterday afternoon at the W L A Jones funeral home, in charge of Dr F C Witzigman, followed by interment in Brighton cemetery. The pall bearers were George Clapper, Jay Carris, Ralph Chorpening, Donald Tuck.
Mayor Lloyd Lytle issues a proclamation declaring Saturday May 25th as Poppy Day in Washington. Citizens are urged to wear the American Legion and Auxiliary memorial poppy and donate to aid the war living victims, honoring World War dead and disabled veterans.
The May meeting of the Methodist church Men's Club features speakers Lee Holland Carl Hedges Cloud Willits and Leigh Soule discussing plans for the coming year. Harrison Dodder leads the dinner committee serving at 630 PM. Officers will be elected and the session ends the season. directed by O EK Sebmitt. A large attendance is anticipated.
The House voted 322 to 98 to override President Roosevelt's veto of the Patman bonus bill. Iowa split 7 to 2 in favor of overriding, with Utterback and Bierman dissenting. Roosevelt called the bill disastrous and warned printing press money would spark inflation, threaten savings, and burden the nation’s credit.
